OIA-ILH Challenge: Punahou 68, Farrington 50

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2014

Punahou and unbeaten Farrington met last week at the James Alegre Invitational. Farrington won 61-53. This time, Punahou has its football guys back, healed up from the long season. Big crowd was huddled around the big-screen TV here at Moanalua as Marcus Mariota delivered his Heisman Memorial Trophy speech. Congratulations to a gentleman and scholar. Q1: Punahou 6, Farrington 4, 4:53 Buffanblu using a 2-2-1 fullcourt press to slow the Govs. Farrington’s not crisp in its halfcourt offense against PUN’s […]

Saint Louis, Pahoa play for title

By Paul Honda on December 13, 2014

Not far from a live lava flow… Pahoa’s boys team continued its perfect (6-0) preseason and is drumming up a lot of well-deserved attention as the state’s Cinderella story. The small school in Puna added another proverbial feather to its hat by defeating Waiakea 42-36 on Friday in the semifinal round of the St. Joseph Cardinal Clifford Dias Classic in Hilo. Keinan Agonias scored 14 points and Tolby Saito added 12 for the Daggers. They will face Saint Louis, which […]

Recap: Thursday hoop highlights

By Paul Honda on December 12, 2014

It’s Friday morning, which means the busy week is winding down for most humans. For hoopaholics, however, things are just getting a little more interesting. What have we learned after one day of the ‘Iolani Classic and OIA-ILH Challenge? >> Konawaena is unflappable. The Wildcats are one of the smallest teams in the Classic, yet nothing fazes them. They dissected Miramonte’s three-quarter press and halfcourt traps with regularity. I didn’t expect a 44-point first half by the Wildcats, and they […]

Hoops crawl: Warriors win, Govs-Raiders battle

By Paul Honda on December 11, 2014

Got here (Moanalua) to the OIA-ILH Challenge after covering the Konawaena-Miramonte INSTANT CLASSIC girls hoops matchup at ‘Iolani. Leilehua had a 22-18 halftime lead, but yielded to Kamehameha’s persistent defense, and the Warriors won 48-43 behind Jayden Zarriello’s 19 points. Liam Fitzgerald had 10 points and Joseph Gouty added nine for Leilehua (2-2). Both are young teams; Kamehameha has just one senior on the roster after guard Jake Smith transferred to Farrington in the offseason. But Greg Tacon’s squad hasn’t […]

Hoop-a-thon Saturday crawl

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2014

This is the first stop of the day, Kalaheo vs. University at the Hawaii Self-Storage Black and Gold Classic. Later, I’m hoping to catch (traffic permitting) games at the James Alegre Invitational (Radford) before the tourney final at the Surfriders Holiday Classic. Why spend 10 hours watching hoops and driving all over the island? Why not, I say. It’s only one week and a few days since tryouts and cuts ended. What we see is pretty much what the coaches […]

Saturday morning: What have we learned?

By Paul Honda on December 6, 2014

For basketball fans, the week of tournaments on the boys side was (and is) pretty awesome. I say awesome in the sense that there were tourneys in town, on the Windward side, and somewhat near Central Oahu (Radford). I can’t even remember the last time I saw a preseason tourney on the Leeward side or in Central Oahu. But I also say pretty awesome because, well, we haven’t gotten the matchup I wanted to see: Kalaheo vs. Maryknoll. That does, […]
