Post-game: Great tourney, classic finish

By Paul Honda on May 15, 2013

Some post-tourney thoughts. Yes, it does feel a little anticlimactic, thinking back to games that were almost a week ago. But this was one of the best state tourneys in recent memory. • Year of the Control Freaks. That’s right, we had a healthy supply of elite pitchers who relied on finesse more than sheer power. Whether it was Kian Kurokawa (Hilo), Trey Saito (Mid-Pacific) or, arguably, the surprise of the tourney, Mililani pitcher Kanoa Hironaka, fans at Iron Maehara […]

HHSAA D-I baseball title game update (9:05 pm)

By Paul Honda on May 14, 2013

State title game time at Murakami Stadium. Beautiful Murakami Stadium. I’ll post updates here. Top 1st – Wasted opportunity for MPI. Kiner-Falefa singled to right, Collier reached on a bunt single. But Doi grounded into a 6-3 double play and Fentriss grounded out to first. Bot 1st – Sonognini singles for Mililani, but is left stranded. Saito threw 17 pitches in that first inning — a relatively high number by his standards. Sonognini continues to be one of the top […]

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2013

(More on the state tourney. This is the extended version of day 2’s quarterfinal games. The shorter version is in the print edition this morning.) WAILUKU — Kanoa Hironaka pitched the game of his life, a four-hitter against the top-seeded Baldwin Bears before a packed house at Iron Maehara Stadium — their home field — as the Trojans (11-7) advanced to the semifinals with a 5-1 win in the quarterfinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball D-I Championships. Hironaka, a […]

Baseball tourney, day 1 extended

By Paul Honda on May 10, 2013

(Here’s the original content, extended version, of the first-round games of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball D-I Championships on Maui. Yes, it’s long. That’s why the print version is much shorter. God bless our editors.) WAILUKU — Better late than never for the Mililani Trojans. Mililani reached Waipahu ace Dylan Sugimoto for two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a stunning 2-1 win on Wednesday in the opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State […]

By Paul Honda on May 9, 2013

Thursday, May 9, 12:13 p.m. WAILUKU — Posted updates on Facebook yesterday during the opening round from here (Iron Maehara Stadium). Should’ve been posting here first. So here goes with Day 2, quarterfinal round, on a sunny, beautiful day on Maui. Hilo 2, Kailua 0, bottom 4th. The BIIF champions scored twice in the third inning on a two-run triple by Jodd Carter. Until the third, Kailua pitcher Brysen Ah Sam was in command with four strikeouts in the first […]

Donahue: extended story

By Paul Honda on May 7, 2013

(Here’s the extended version of today’s feature story on ‘Iolani baseball player Christian Donahue. The shorter version is here.) If there’s life in the ‘Iolani dugout, nobody could’ve sensed it a few short months ago. But coach Brent Shimokawa insisted on energy. Spirit. Confidence. So the Raiders pulled out of their early-season slump, made a major run late and even upset No. 1 Mid-Pacific in the ILH tournament. By Saturday, ‘Iolani pulled out a remarkable 2-1 win over Saint Louis […]

Update: STL-IOL decision pending

By Paul Honda on May 3, 2013

The Saint Louis-‘Iolani game that was halted by rain on Friday afternoon will resume on Saturday, 3 p.m., at Ala Wai Field. That, however, is the only concrete decision that has been made since the playoff game — for a state-tournament berth — was officially postponed at 4:32 p.m. with heavy rain and lingering, gray clouds above the field. The big question is whether the game will be played from the point of today’s stoppage — ‘Iolani led 2-1 and […]
