LIVE BLOG: Punahou 6, ‘Iolani 2, F

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2015

I like daytime baseball, but night-time games here at Les Murakami are beautiful, too. ‘Iolani and Punahou are squaring off in the second game of an ILH twinbill. First inning The Raiders strike in the top of the first with two runs off Punahou southpaw Michael Viola. Austin Jim On led off with a single and later came home on Pikai Winchester’s single to right. Impressive at-bat by Winchester, who battled back from a two-strike out and fouled off three […]

LIVE BLOG: MPI 2, KS 1, F

By Paul Honda on March 27, 2015

Sunny, blue skies here at Les Murakami Stadium for this showdown of Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific, two teams tied for the lead in the ILH baseball standings at 5-1. The scent of burnt foliage and the sound of whirring helicopter propellers is upon us. Firefighters are still working on the brush fire that has again scorched part of nearby Waahila Ridge. KS has Ladd Ah Choy on the mound. MPI has Grant Doi. Both are right-handed seniors. First inning The Owls […]

Campbell’s other pitchers rounding into shape

By Nick Abramo on March 26, 2015

Four battlers instead of one ace resulted in an eerily similar pitching line for Campbell in Thursday night’s 7-0 victory over Waipahu. When OIA West teams see the Sabers coming on the schedule, it sure must seem like a pleasant surprise when they find out that Ian Kahaloa is not pitching. Such was the case for the Marauders on Thursday, but it didn’t matter. No Kahaloa on the mound. No difference. Four Campbell hurlers — left-handed starter Dorrien Hermosura, Chad […]

Kahuku’s losses mount: Avea transfers

By Paul Honda on March 25, 2015

Kahuku sophomore Samuta Avea, a two-sport varsity athlete with a big future, is going to be a big star one day. It just won’t be at Kahuku. Reports from the North Shore have circulated, and the 6-foot-4 basketball and football player is moving to Utah. He will transfer to Bingham High School. Avea was a backup quarterback for Kahuku’s football team, which reached the state semifinals. He was also a promising young talent on the basketball court, a starting swingman […]

LIVE BLOG: MPI 3, STL 2, F (10 inn.)

By Paul Honda on March 25, 2015

The light drizzle has returned to Les Murakami Stadium for the nightcap, a matchup of powerhouses No. 2 Mid-Pacific (4-1) and No. 7 Saint Louis (2-4). Aces Chase Wago (MPI) and Pono Anderson (STL) on the mound. First inning Alex Oley reaches base on an error (shortstop), but Anderson retires the next two batters to end the threat. Wago sets the Crusaders down in order. Second inning Three up, three down for both pitchers in a quiet second. Third inning […]

LIVE BLOG: Kamehameha 18, Punahou 5, F

By Paul Honda on March 25, 2015

It’s a cool, overcast afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. Fourth-ranked Kamehameha is the visitor and Punahou is the home team. The game is underway with nice work from the UH field maintenance crew, who kept the mound nice and dry on this drizzy day. The ILH is in the midst of three playing dates here at one of the nation’s most beautiful college stadiums. Life is good. Punahou’s Noah Goss on the mound. His counterpart is Chase Miyasato, a sophomore. […]

ILH DH: KSK 14, ‘Iol 0 (6 inn.); Pun 7, StL 5.

By Billy Hull on March 24, 2015

I‘m taking a break from the college scene to watch some high school baseball. ILH doubleheader at Les Murakami Stadium tonight beginning with No. 7 Saint Louis (2-3) against Punahou (1-4). Both teams in need of a win. Buffanblu got their only win of the ILH season so far against the Crusaders, a wild 13-11 affair. No. 4 Kamehameha vs. No. 9 ‘Iolani TOP 1: Nice 15-pitch first inning for ‘Iolani starter Bronson Ichimura, who strikes out two looking on […]

McKinley finding its way in steep uphill climb

By Nick Abramo on March 20, 2015

On the field, the McKinley baseball team is taking its lumps, but that’s OK because it’s a valuable experience for many first-time baseball players. “We’re struggling, but every day we’re getting better,” coach Kyle Kurahashi-Takenaka said. “It’s a learning process. About half of our roster has never played before or haven’t played since they were very young.” The Tigers lost their opener 21-2 to Farrington and then suffered a 40-0 defeat to Aiea. Despite the big loss, Kurahashi-Takenaka said, “None […]
