Dunn & Fun: Owls returning to states

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

The Mid-Pacific Owls are back in the state tourney, and Owl Nation is breathing a collective sigh of relief. “I’m happy we made it back,” senior pitcher/designated hitter Chase Wago said following a 9-1 win over Kamehameha on Thursday that clinched the regular-season title — and automatic state berth. “At the beginning of the year, we had a hard time. We pulled together as a team.” Week 1 was glum for the Owls. They pulled out a nine-inning, 3-2 win […]

Warriors hoping to regain momentum

By Paul Honda on April 8, 2016

It was a helpless feeling for any coach, and Tommy Perkins is a baseball coach in his blood. The longtime Kamehameha coach, who spent 18 seasons as an intermediate coach, wasn’t able to be at Goeas Field for the start of the Warriors’ varsity game against first-place Mid-Pacific on Thursday afternoon. Jury duty beckoned, and he simply didn’t have enough justification to leave early. It probably wouldn’t have mattered a whole lot against a top-ranked Owls team that jumped to […]

No. 1 Mid-Pacific (11-3) and No. 6 Kamehameha (8-5) square off at overcast Goeas Field. The Owls can clinch the ILH regular-season title with a win. Saint Louis needs a Kamehameha win to keep hope alive. Kamehameha coach Tommy Perkins is absent today due to jury duty. 1st Owls score two runs in the top half against Hunter Breault. Jacob Maekawa leads off with a double to left-center, Alex Oley is hit by a curve ball that didn’t curve and […]

The difference between 9-4 and 2-12

By Paul Honda on April 6, 2016

Of all the key elements that separate title contenders from competitive, yet lower-tier teams in the merciless Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball kingdom, clutching up at the plate is certainly one. There’s more to it, naturally, than stranding 11 baserunners and batting 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. But, as Maryknoll coach Randy Yamashiro said after a 6-1 loss to No. 3 Saint Louis on Tuesday, it’s been a struggle. Coming through with two-out base hits has not been easy […]

Kamehameha-Punahou rained out

By Paul Honda on April 5, 2016

As of 2:15 p.m., the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball schedule has already been affected by today’s rainy weather. Three games were scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. Major puddling of the infield at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai forced the postponement of the Kamehameha-Punahou matchup. Kamehameha coach Tommy Perkins confirmed the postponement at around 1:30 p.m. Meanwhile, games at Ala Wai Field (Maryknoll-Saint Louis) and Mid-Pacific (‘Iolani-MPI) are still slated to be played, weather permitting. Ala Wai Field is […]

Defense took center stage in this ILH skirmish

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2016

Defense can be underrated, especially in this fantasy sports fueled world where a home run means a lot but a run-saving defensive play means nothing. I say give 100 points (or whatever else it should be worth) to the field gem. Mid-Pacific’s 4-1, nine-inning Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball victory over Saint Louis on Wednesday at Goeas Field had more than its share of tremendous defensive plays. The Crusaders (7-4) tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the seventh […]

St. Francis takes upward climb in ILH baseball

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2016

Take a look at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II baseball standings and you will see St. Francis at the top of the heap. The Saints are coming off a 13-0 win over Damien on Wednesday and are now 10-1 in the four-team league. Head coach Kip Akana talks about his players as unselfish and team-oriented, and that there are others who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the team is doing things the right way. […]

The difference between 8-3 and 3-8

By Paul Honda on March 30, 2016

They were two outs away. With one out in the top of the seventh inning, the close-but-few-cigars ‘Iolani Raiders were closing in on a win over No. 3-ranked Kamehameha. A two-run lead. Ace Trevor Ichimura spinning a masterful shutout. The formerly ranked, 3-7 Raiders on the cusp of a signature win that could get the season back on the rails in a gauntlet known as ILH baseball. Even ‘Iolani’s polite audience seemed prepared to embrace their team’s finest showing of […]
