Kaiser job was uncanny timing for Ka‘aihue

By Nick Abramo on August 11, 2016

Sometimes if you put the work in and you remain positive, things have a way of working out in a nice package for you. Take Kila Ka‘aihue, for instance. He spent 14 years playing professional baseball, including parts of four seasons in the majors. The work … it’s in. Staying positive? Well, he has 4-year-old twins and they were the reason why he decided to call it a career and come home. Simply put, he set out to be the […]

Kaiser’s Umemoto out as baseball coach

By Nick Abramo on June 24, 2016

The revolving door continues in full swing for coaches at Kaiser. Head baseball coach Ryan Umemoto is the latest to find himself on the outside. The Cougars administration sent out a job posting, looking for applicants for the head baseball position. It is not clear whether Umemoto decided to step down or he was not rehired to the standard OIA one-year contract. No word was given on whether the move had anything to do with Umemoto’s ejection along with another […]

Viela’s legacy: Old school with a twist

By Paul Honda on May 29, 2016

For Jon Viela, the time was right. Win or lose, he was ready to take that next step up the ladder. Viela recently retired from his coaching position after 25 seasons at Baldwin — nine as head coach — to become the next athletic director at Kamehameha-Maui. Going out with a perfect season and a state baseball championship was a dreamy script for the longtime baseball guru. Looking back, Viela says it’s been about adapting without compromise. It is true, […]

Alo-Kaonohi embraces the old and the new

By Paul Honda on May 29, 2016

On the Valley Isle, there has always been an undercurrent of townies and Upcountry folks riding slightly different waves toward their destinations. Up north, though, living off the grid in the original gated community, recent Baldwin graduate Kawena Alo-Kaonohi gets a taste of the life he loves most. It’s not a heavy dose; he goes to Kahakuloa Village, miles up the coast from Wailuku, where the paved road ends, for weekend stays with his father, Chico. “Kahakuloa Valley, it’s a […]

Macias on hitting .542: ‘Could’ve been better’

By Paul Honda on May 29, 2016

The man with the black-and-orange bat and the smoothest method of collecting baseballs on the prep diamond is named after, well, a basketball legend. Jordan Macias picked up a (toy) bat and started swinging long before he could do much of anything else. Roughly 15 years later, the Campbell shortstop is the Star-Advertiser position player of the year. He hit .542 and stole 25 bases in 26 attempts. Besides that, he has stupendous range on the field and handles the […]
