Punahou’s Guieb makes arduous comeback

By Nick Abramo on April 2, 2017

Sometimes fans take for granted what athletes go through just to get on the field of play. Let Riley Guieb‘s story be a reminder of the persistence needed to fight through a long battle with injury. The right-handed senior pitcher for the seventh-ranked Punahou baseball team almost didn’t make it out to the diamond this season, but there he was on Saturday making a statement in a big game — a 5-4 victory over No. 4 Saint Louis in nine innings. […]

Punahou-Maryknoll game continuation is Tuesday

By Nick Abramo on April 2, 2017

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball regular season was supposed to end Saturday, but two teams will complete the seventh inning of a protested game on Tuesday. Before that March 16 contest was put under protest by Maryknoll coach Eric Kadooka, Punahou scored a 6-0 victory. But, due to a Buffanblu player hurdling the Maryknoll catcher illegally to score a run in a four-run seventh inning, Kadooka protested to the league and it was upheld. On Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. […]

Watanuki and his Mules enjoy new field

By Nick Abramo on April 1, 2017

The Leilehua Mules have a place to call home now. The Mules, who have played their baseball games at Fred Wright Park for a long, long time, are loving their brand-new field at Wahiawa Middle School. “It was a lot of sweat and work by a lot of people building it,” Leilehua coach Lane Watanuki said. “The kids are really enjoying playing on it.” Watanuki and his squad had to share Fred Wright Park — which is run by the […]

Saturday’s the big day in the ILH, maybe

By Nick Abramo on March 31, 2017

Coach Thomas Perkins gave this advice to his second-ranked Kamehameha Warriors after Friday’s loss to Punahou: “Today’s done. We’re just gonna come back and be who we are and play our game.” It’s a huge day Saturday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball. A regular-season champion could be determined, but if both Kamehameha (11-3) and Saint Louis (11-3) win, another game would be held next week to determine that title and a spot in the state tournament. But if one […]

Spartans’ Kadooka at corner of patience, urgency

By Paul Honda on March 29, 2017

Somewhere between the seven baseball state championships (2004-10) at Punahou and this first season as head coach at Maryknoll, Eric Kadooka has transformed and evolved one step at a time. Losing, though, still leaves a bitter taste. When he looked across the diamond at his former program, Kadooka saw the Buffanblu, a 7-5 team in a ruthless ILH chase, armed with talent and experience and depth up and down the roster. His own Spartans? Young. Just three senior starters, including […]

Major leagues are scouting Hawaii talent

By Nick Abramo on March 28, 2017

Major league scouts don’t announce themselves when they show up to a Hawaii high school baseball game and they don’t wear a badge identifying who they are. But they are here in Hawaii this spring checking out a handful of talented players and bringing back their reports to the big clubs. Many Hawaii fans are already aware of the MLB scouts’ interest in Kailua left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo and Kamehameha right-hander Hunter Breault. But the scouting has not been limited […]

Kamehameha, Campbell move up in rankings

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2017

Kamehameha was a big mover in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 poll released today. The Warriors (10-2), by virtue of their 1-0 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday, climbed three spots to No. 2 in the rankings. The result was upheld after Saint Louis protested the game believing Kamehameha ace Hunter Breault threw more pitches than he was allowed in the new pitch count rule implemented this year. Baldwin, the defending Division I state champion, remained at No. 1 […]

Saint Louis baseball protest denied

By Nick Abramo on March 27, 2017

Kamehameha’s 1-0 victory over Saint Louis on Thursday at Goeas Field will stand. A protest made by Crusaders coach George Gusman was denied by the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, he said today. Gusman believed Warriors starting pitcher Hunter Breault was over the maximum pitch count. Breault threw 101 pitches against Saint Louis and also threw 20 on Tuesday in a 5-2 win over Punahou at Goeas Field. The ILH denied the protest because the rule is 110 maximum pithes on […]
