Watanuki and his Mules enjoy new field

The Leilehua Mules have a place to call home now.

The Mules, who have played their baseball games at Fred Wright Park for a long, long time, are loving their brand-new field at Wahiawa Middle School.

“It was a lot of sweat and work by a lot of people building it,” Leilehua coach Lane Watanuki said. “The kids are really enjoying playing on it.”

Watanuki and his squad had to share Fred Wright Park — which is run by the county — with lots of other organizations. He believes less teams will be using the state-run field at Wahiawa Middle.

“We shared Fred Wright Park with three different football groups, softball teams, and at other times, we shared it with soccer and rugby teams,” he said. “It’s a heavily used field.”

The next step at the new field will be to install bleachers, and that will be Watanuki’s summer project.

“We have the frames,” he said. “We just gotta put the seats in. This is two years in the making, and it slowly got done. Now, it’s playable.”

The Mules have played two games on the new field and won them both — 2-0 over Waipahu on March 22 and 3-2 over Mililani on March 25.

Leilehua (4-5) can make it three in a row at its new home on Saturday against Aiea (3-6).
