Battery powers Mid-Pacific over Punahou

By Christian Shimabuku on March 3, 2018

No. 3 Mid-Pacific was powered by its battery in a 5-0 win over a No. 5 Punahou at Ala Wai field on Saturday, a game in which the Owls (2-0) benefited from both experience and youth. Michael China was masterful against the Buffanblu (1-1), tossing a four-hit shutout in just 73 pitches while striking out two and walking none. The senior pitched behind a stout defense that had no errors and made each play look routine. “Just throwing strikes, trusting […]

Mililani’s golden arms: 1 run in 14 innings

By Paul Honda on March 2, 2018

Mark Hirayama is a worthy candidate in the “Stay Calm” category of baseball. The longtime Mililani coach has seen plenty of storms and waves over the years, which is why a 1-0 loss to No. 8 Campbell on Wednesday didn’t have any affect on his outlook. The seventh-ranked Trojans seemed to feed off their coach on Friday as three pitchers combined on a one-hitter as they blanked Pearl City 6-0. It’s just life in the rugged Oahu Interscholastic Association West, […]

Young ignites offensive explosion for No. 3 MPI

By Jason Kaneshiro on March 1, 2018

A ringing liner off of Wyatt Young’s bat set the tone for an opening-day outburst for the Mid-Pacific offense. The MPI shortstop ignited a 16-hit attack with his leadoff single in the top of the first, added a double and a triple, scored three runs and drove in another in the third-ranked Owls’ resounding 14-5 win over No. 5 Kamehameha to start the ILH season on Wednesday in Hawaii Kai. The Owls sprayed line drives around Goeas Field throughout the […]

Learning process continues for Ka’anoi, Kamehameha

By Jason Kaneshiro on February 28, 2018

Just three weeks into Kahi Ka’anoi’s tenure as Kamehameha baseball coach, the Warriors opened the ILH season in the midst of a steep learning curve. But the schedule goes on and after a turbulent preseason, the Warriors absorbed a 14-5 loss to No. 3 Mid-Pacific to begin the league schedule on Wednesday at Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai. The Warriors gave up a run in the first and a two-out error in the second helped fuel MPI’s five-run outburst with […]

Campbell, Mililani begin OIA season in 1-0 duel

By Nick Abramo on February 28, 2018

There is not much separating Campbell baseball from Mililani baseball. That’s always how it is out in the OIA West. The two are at it again. No. 8 Campbell came through with a 1-0 victory over No. 7 Mililani in the season opener at the Trojans’ field on Wednesday. Pitching and defense and taking advantage of whatever you can take advantage of on offense. Mililani had a total of four base runners and two of them got as far as […]

Experience lifts No. 1 ‘Iolani over No. 4 Saint Louis

By Paul Honda on February 28, 2018

We are now officially just over five hours into the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball regular season. ‘Iolani, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Top 10, came through with a tough 8-5 win over No. 4 Saint Louis on a cloudy, cool afternoon at the Raiders’ field. Cloudy? Cool? In Lower Moiliili? There were other interesting elements at play. ‘Iolani rolled out their new uniforms, what might be described as power red jerseys with ice pewter numbers and pants. Really […]
