By Paul Honda on March 23, 2019

Ayzek Silva was ready to carry the load. The senior permitted two runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings as No. 7 Campbell got past No. 5 Mililani 4-2 on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium. “It was just another game. We couldn’t take these (TV) cameras and put them into play. We just had to play baseball,” Silva said. “Mililani’s always a good hitting team. I just had to throw strikes and go after them. […]

By Paul Honda on March 23, 2019

It was a marathon of a game, which can be a hazard for young baseball teams. For No. 10 Kailua, having a veteran like Jalen Ah Yat always helps. The senior stabilized the Surfriders on the mound with 1 2/3 innings in relief, including three strikeouts, and cracked a game-winning, walk-off single with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as Kailua outlasted Kalani 6-5 on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium. Saint Louis suddenly in thick of ILH baseball race

By Kyle Sakamoto on March 23, 2019

So much for ILH baseball being a two-team race. At the same time Mid-Pacific handed No. 2 ‘Iolani its first loss of the season, No. 6 Saint Louis scored a big win over No. 8 Kamehameha Ala Wai Field. Junior right-hander Richie Vidal picked up the victory after facing the minimum over 3 2/3 innings of relief in a 3-1 win over the Warriors to pull the Crusaders (7-2) within a game of ‘Iolani (8-1) in the league standings. Aaron Ujimori’s complete game and home run lift ‘Iolani over Punahou

By Paul Honda on March 21, 2019

Having the best stuff doesn’t mean teams automatically advance in the NCAA tournament. The same goes on the mound for pitchers. Aaron Ujimori didn’t have his usual sharp curve ball, but he located his fastball and change-up with surgical precision as No. 2 ‘Iolani overwhelmed No. 7 Punahou 7-2 on Tuesday at a breezy, sunny Father Bray Athletic Complex. Ujimori allowed one earned run, struck out four and walked none for the complete-game win. The Raiders improved to 8-0 in […]

Q&A: ‘Iolani outfielder Shane Sasaki

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2019

‘Iolani’s hit machine is a phenomenon, a result of reps and development. The process has been simple and certainly not easy. Shane Sasaki and his teammates haven’t stopped since reaching the state semifinals in 2018. Swings in the batting cage. Reps in the weight room. No rest for the weary. Sasaki is batting .591 with three homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored during ‘Iolani’s 6-0 run to start the ILH season. Last year, he was a Star-Advertiser All-State second-team […]

Defending OIA champ Mililani makes biggest jump

By Paul Honda on March 18, 2019

For a third week in a row, Baldwin occupies the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Again, however, Baldwin (11-1, 3-0 MIL) saw its hold on first-place votes has diminished slightly. The defending state champions collected eight first-place votes, while ILH front-runner ‘Iolani (16-3, 6-0) received the other two. Waiakea (9-1, 4-0 BIIF) leaped a notch over Punahou (13-1-1, 5-0 ILH) to No. 3. Punahou and ‘Iolani will play on Thursday in a key ILH showdown at […]

Jake Tsukada’s 5 RBIs keep Punahou undefeated in ILH

By Paul Honda on March 16, 2019

The chase for the one and only automatic state-tourney berth in the regular season for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu is turning into a two-team race. Just don’t say it to the Punahou Buffanblu and ‘Iolani Raiders. Neither team is willing to call it that, even though they are the only unbeaten teams in the chase. Punahou kept it close on Saturday with a 14-2 rout of Kamehameha at sizzling-hot Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. Punahou is now […]
