Bryson Ewaliko saves Kailua’s win over Castle

By Christian Shimabuku on March 15, 2019

With a new name, Bryson Ewaliko is still at the top of his game. The Kailua senior, known as Bryson Ballesteros until just two weeks ago, locked down the save in Kailua’s 7-4 win over Castle on Friday afternoon. Ewaliko was overpowering in his one inning of work, striking out two Knights before getting Ian Rivera to fly out to end the game. Ewaliko earned Star-Advertiser first-team All-State honors as a junior alongside teammate Stone Parker and Waiakea’s David Nakamura, […]

St. Francis beats Damien, but loses dance contest

By Nick Abramo on March 14, 2019

Damien right fielder Kyle Kinney probably won’t make it on America’s Got Talent anytime soon, but he almost danced his way to a Monarchs victory Thursday at Central Oahu Regional Park. Instead, though, St. Francis held off hard-changing, arch rival Damien 6-4 in an ILH Division II baseball game. So let’s set the dance stage. The Monarchs were trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth with Kinney on second base after a single and Jordan Donahue on first on […]

Punahou avoids crucial mistakes to stay undefeated in ILH

By Nick Abramo on March 12, 2019

Punahou coach Keenan Sue felt fortunate to be on the correct end of a 5-3 ILH baseball victory over Saint Louis on Tuesday at Goeas Field. It’s an awfully tough gig to be in the ILH, where talent and competition abounds each and every year. The Buffanblu (3-0) got it done with a four-run fifth inning to snatch the victory away from the Crusaders (2-2), who had taken a 3-1 lead. It allowed Punahou to remain one of only two […]

Shane Sasaki’s 2-homer day sparks ‘Iolani over Kamehameha

By Paul Honda on March 12, 2019

Another game, another 15 base hits for the ‘Iolani hit squad. The Raiders made it another juggernaut afternoon, getting a 4-for-4, two-home run effort from center fielder Shane Sasaki en route to a 12-6 win over No. 10 Kamehameha on Tuesday at ‘Iolani field. ‘Iolani is now 4-0 in ILH play, leading Punahou (3-0) and the rest of the pack. Kamehameha’s six runs on nine hits is more than respectable. The Raiders just didn’t make any mental errors. And boy, […]

‘Iolani chips into Baldwin’s hold of No. 1 in Baseball Top 10

By Paul Honda on March 11, 2019

Pitching and defense may well win championships, but offense can sure sway a voter or two. Baldwin is still the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10, but a week of inactivity — the MIL season begins this week — and more torrid hitting by ‘Iolani caused minor seismic activity. Baldwin had all 10 first-place votes last week, but lost one to the ‘Iolani hit machine today. Baldwin (8-1, 0-0 MIL) collected nine of the 10 top votes […]

Prep baseball roundup: Kaiser’s offense on fire early

By Billy Hull on March 9, 2019

A four-run deficit in the first inning wasn’t going to slow down the Kaiser baseball team. The Cougars scored in every inning and plated at least three runs in all but one frame in a 17-7 mauling of OIA East rival Kalani in six innings on Saturday at Kaiser’s home field. Christian Reasoner tripled twice and was one of two Kaiser players to drive in four runs as the Cougars moved to 2-0 in league play following Thursday’s win over […]

Micah Yonamine’s 2 HRs, 7 RBIs power ‘Iolani over Saint Louis, 14-7

By Paul Honda on March 7, 2019

Time has a way of rewarding those with work ethic. Micah Yonamine and his ‘Iolani teammates would know. The Raiders have been on a hitting tear since day one of preseason, and it continued in ILH regular-season play this week. No. 2 ‘Iolani outscored St. Francis 11-5 on Tuesday, and this afternoon, the Raiders rallied with a six-run fifth inning to outlast No. 7 Saint Louis 14-7 at rainy, sunny, gusty and sometimes still Goeas Field. ‘Iolani’s 2-0 start in […]

Landon Carter’s 3-hitter sparks No. 4 Punahou over Damien, 3-0

By Paul Honda on March 5, 2019

Keenan Sue says the Punahou Buffanblu don’t see a lot of off-speed pitches on a daily basis, not like before. In years past, there were some pitchers who relied heavily on finesse. The staff has a lot of fireballers now, and when it came time to face Damien’s crafty River Iaea, timing was often not there. Punahou got enough offense, despite a 1-for-13 combined hitting performance from batters one through four, to eke out a 3-0 win over gritty Damien […]
