By Paul Honda on May 8, 2019

Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships Iron Maehara Stadium Opening round Wednesday, May 8, 2019 Final: Kailua pulls out a strange, borderline insane 10-1 win over Maui in nine innings. Bot 9: Ah Yat, who replaced Ewaliko on the mound to start the eighth, is back to finish. Kokobun leads off for Maui with a triple to right. Ah Yat retires the next three, game over. What a wacky game. Kailua advances to the quarterfinals and will play BIIF champion […]

STATE BASEBALL RANKINGS: Five neighbor-island teams in Top 10

By Paul Honda on May 6, 2019

Five neighbor-island teams are ranked in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10 released today. It’s the first time it has happened this season and just the third time in the history of the poll. Baldwin, which lost a first-place vote to ILH champion Punahou this week, is No. 1 for the 11th straight week dating back to the last season. Kamehameha-Hawaii, the top seed in the Division II state tournament beginning Thursday, is No. 4 for the second straight […]

The Bears, who have won the D-I title two of the last three years, play the Waiakea/Saint Louis winner from Wednesday in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The other Division I seeded teams are ILH champ Punahou at No. 2, BIIF champ Hilo at No. 3 and OIA champ Mililani at No. […]

Battle of friends goes Punahou’s way for ILH title

By Paul Honda on May 1, 2019

The battle of frenemies was epic for Punahou and Kamehameha. Punahou relied on aces Matt McConnell and Landon Carter to capture the ILH baseball championship on Wednesday, outlasting Kamehameha 2-0 at Hans L’Orange Park. McConnell and his counterpart, Christian DeJesus, put on a remarkable pitchers’ duel through nearly six innings. The two starting pitchers are friends off the field. “I saw them at the ‘Iolani Fair,” Kamehameha coach Daryl Kitagawa said. “Hat’s off to Matt and Landon.” McConnell, a right-hander, […]

Saint Louis junior JT Navyac has some swagger at shortstop

By Nick Abramo on April 30, 2019

Saint Louis’ JT Navyac has some serious shortstop skills and they were on display Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to Kamehameha at Hans L’Orange Park. It’s no wonder the kid — only a junior — committed to Cal State Fullerton about a year and a half ago. Here’s some of what he did Tuesday: >> Tracked down a ground ball deep into the hole and threw out a runner by a step in the third. >> Tracked down a hard […]

Kamehameha schools charge higher in Baseball Top 10

By Paul Honda on April 29, 2019

With the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championships just nine days away, two Kamehameha schools are making a big charge up the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Baseball Top 10. Undefeated Kamehameha-Hawaii, which has beaten Waiakea and shut out Hilo this season, took advantage of loses by other top schools to climb all the way to No. 4 in the latest rankings released today. The Warriors (17-0) are the first Division II team in the history of the Star-Advertiser poll to crack the […]

Never-say-die Trojans walk off with another OIA baseball championship

By Paul Honda on April 27, 2019

It was a prom night to remember for the Mililani Trojans. Except for one minor detail: a handful of the Trojans never made it to senior prom on Saturday night. Instead, they battled to defend their OIA baseball championship. For five innings, it seemed like prom might have been a better idea. Campbell led 2-0 with Varen Sabino on the mound. Sabino was coasting along with a one-hitter, using a mix of fastballs and sharp curve balls to confound the […]
