Vodzak sets ILH air rifle record

Punahou’s Dylan Vodzak set a record by scoring 482.8 to win the varsity division at the ILH Precision Air Rifle Individual Championships on Saturday at Mid-Pacific Institute. Kamehameha’s Keanu Paikai is the previous record-holder (481.5). The top eight participants from Saturday are below. Sacred Hearts takes ILH air rifle title

Sacred Hearts clinched the ILH precision air rifle championship on Saturday. The Lancers tied with Punahou for first place with a 6-1 record, but won the the season-average tiebreaker for the title. St. Francis’ Villanueva shoots 383 in ILH air riflery

St. Francis’ Isabel Villanueva scored 383, the highest score in Saturday’s ILH precision air riflery matches. Villanueva’s 383 came in a win over Saint Louis. She also recorded a 379 in a loss to Island Pacific. Sacred Hearts’ Angelique Mara shot a 379, in a loss to Island Pacific. That was fun. It’s not often that little quirks in fundamentals lead to championship-level performance, but that’s exactly the case with St. Francis seniors Isabel Villanueva and Toni Silva. The two finished first and second in the Civilian Air Marksman/HHSAA air riflery state championships on Tuesday. (See the story in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser, subscriber content.) Villanueva, Ebesu take ILH air riflery titles

Isabel Villanueva of St. Francis hit 24 bulls and shot a three-round total of 550 to win the girls ILH air riflery championship on Saturday at the Saint Louis range. Villanueva was almost automatic from the prone position, hitting 15 bulls — seven in a row at one point — and scoring 197 points to earn a medal for that discipline as well. Kalani’s boys and Pearl City’s girls won the OIA air riflery team championships on Saturday at Pearl City. Shane Xu’s score 513.09 led the Falcons to a 1,937.19 to 1,924.24 victory over Moanalua. Danielle Tababe shot a 540.21 as the Chargers defeated Kalani 2,093 to 1,935.24. Tanabe’s score was also good enough for the girls individual title. Punahou’s Rodan ties ILH air riflery record

Punahou senior Dean Rodan tied the ILH Sporter Air Riflery record on Saturday in a victory over Kamehameha. Rodan will compete in the ILH championships next Saturday at Mid-Pacific. Rodan’s three-position score of 279 tied the mark set by Kamehameha’s Keanu Paikai on Oct. 2, 2010. Paikai won the state championship that year and followed it with another title in 2011.
