Punahou a near-unanimous No. 1 in Girls Volleyball Top 10

By Paul Honda on November 15, 2021

The stars continue to align for Punahou. The Buffanblu received top votes on nine of the 10 coaches and media ballots to retain the No. 1 ranking in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 on Monday. A week ago, Punahou had six out of 10 first-place votes. Kamehameha, which had four first-place votes last week, had just one this time and remains at No. 2. ‘Iolani is at No. 3 again with a showdown at Kamehameha on slate Tuesday night. […]

Raiders, Warriors, Buffanblu and more on NLI signing day

By Paul Honda on November 10, 2021

While ‘Iolani held a signing ceremony on early Wednesday morning, national letter-of-intent day was busy for plenty of student-athletes, especially from Kamehameha and Punahou. The early-period signing day included all sports with the exception of football. The next national letter-of-intent signing day will be in February. At Kamehameha, a signing ceremony was held for six Warriors: baseball players Beau Sylvester (Washington) and Keola Yim (William Jessup), softball players Haley Agena (Saint Martin’s), Nikki Donahue (Texas-Arlington) and Madison Rabe (Georgian Court), […]

Tufono, who had 16 kills, 18 assists and two blocks against the Warriors, was named to the AVCA All-America second team today. She is the only player from Hawaii to make any of the three teams. The 5-foot-10, do-everything player for the Raiders this season signed her national letter of intent to play at UCLA this morning. Our first NLI of […]

Punahou regains No. 1 ranking in Girls Volleyball Top 10

By Paul Honda on November 8, 2021

Maybe it was the power of stillness. Whatever the reason(s), coaches and media in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 had a chance of heart since last week, moving Punahou ahead of Kamehameha for the No. 1 ranking on Monday. Punahou (7-2) collected six of 10 first-place votes and returned to the top spot for the first time since Oct. 18. Kamehameha garnered the other four first-place votes. Both teams, along with No. 3 ‘Iolani, had a bye through last […]

Family, friends and gratitude at Kalani’s senior night

By Paul Honda on November 5, 2021

It takes a different kind of endurance to get through this race. Kalani senior co-captains Tayler Gomes and Kailee Wakatake know this well. With fans in the stands once again, on a restricted basis, the Lady Falcons responded with their best volleyball match of the season. At least, in the eyes of Gomes and Wakatake. The Falcons’ 25-15, 25-18, 25-18 sweep of Kaiser put the two neighboring schools in a tie in the OIA East standings at 4-3. “It was […]

By Paul Honda on November 4, 2021

The balance of power shifts in ILH girls volleyball, in Division II, but the onus is on Damien to keep its momentum. The Lady Monarchs are ranked No. 5 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, the highest among D-II teams. “I think our team is pretty humble. We put the work in,” outside hitter Kody Wengler said. “We humble ourselves. We just keep pushing,” setter Kenna Wengler said. “We never settle for minimum.” When Damien met Mililani recently for […]

Waianae setter/Pitt commit Haiti Tautua‘a leads with action

By Paul Honda on November 2, 2021

The day-by-day grind rarely stops. Haiti Tautua‘a wouldn’t have it any other way. The Waianae setter turned down more than 30 scholarship offers and committed to Pitt, where she will join the women’s volleyball team — in 2023. Tautua‘a is just a junior. “I love it there,” the 6-foot setter said after a recent visit to the Panthers’ campus with her father, Francis. “It’s beautiful, but it’s cold for us.” Tautua‘a is the featured student-athlete in today’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Waianae […]

Kamehameha edges Punahou for No. 1 ranking in Girls Volleyball Top 10

By Paul Honda on November 1, 2021

Coaches know best. Or maybe not. For a second week in a row, Kamehameha is atop the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10. The Warriors defeated Mid-Pacific last week to finish ILH play 6-3, behind eventual first-place finisher Punahou. Kamehameha collected six of 10 first-place votes while Punahou garnered the other four. One point separated the two powerhouse programs. Punahou (7-2) is No. 2 for a second week in a row despite being the only team from the ILH, or […]
