Kahuku fueled up for title run after four-set win over No. 5 Kapolei

By Paul Honda on December 1, 2021

There’s no place like home for Kahuku’s volleyball team. But home is normally where the heart is, and that heart travelled afar on Tuesday night. Kahuku handed Kapolei its first loss of the season in the OIA semifinal round 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23 to set up an all-East final on Thursday. The Division I final between No. 4-ranked Moanalua and No. 6 Kahuku (11-1) will begin after the D-II title match pitting Kalaheo and Leilehua. Even with restricted capacity due […]

Mililani, Moanalua destined for ultimate OIA semifinal showdown

By Paul Honda on November 29, 2021

There’s a certain, steely look in the eyes of the Mililani Trojans. The proud program won four Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championships under Val Crabbe since 2011, including back-to-back crowns in ’18 and ’19. A mid-season loss to Kapolei, now the top seed out of the OIA West, did more than put a rare loss in the standings for Mililani. It helped the Lady Trojans evolve. After a 25-16, 25-10, 25-18 sweep of Farrington on Monday night, the Trojans […]

The ILH champion has now been atop the rankings for four weeks in a row since surpassing Kamehameha on Nov. 8. Punahou (10-2) has been idle from game action since defeating No. 2 Kamehameha for the ILH championship on Nov. 20. The rest of the coaches and media poll is status quo with no position changes. Baldwin has sealed a state-tournament […]

University rallies past Le Jardin in epic ILH D-II title match

By Paul Honda on November 23, 2021

Expectations and goals could have been lower for the Jr. ‘Bows of University High. They know the lows well. As of Monday night, they know the highest of highs, too. ULS’ 25-20, 25-27, 20-25, 25-21, 15-7 win over Le Jardin for the ILH Division II championship on Monday wasn’t as much shocking as it was an extraordinary pinnacle, a genuine turnaround from a 1-3 start. A team this young, so unfamiliar with each other, coming back from a cancelled season, […]

The OIA girls volleyball regular season wrapped up Thursday night and the playoffs will begin Wednesday at two sites in Division I and at Radford for the Division II opening round. Defending champion Mililani, which beat Moanalua in five sets to win the OIA crown in 2019, is the No. 2 seed out of the OIA West and will play the Farrington/Pearl City winner a week from Monday at Moanalua. A win would set up a likely rematch against Na […]

Four years later, pals Devin Kahahawai, Mokihana Tufono battle for a state berth

By Paul Honda on November 17, 2021

Two years ago, it was Punahou that was the runner-up from the ILH playing in the opening round of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships. Kamehameha drew the top seed, swept Kapolei and Moanalua, then met Punahou in the final. The Warriors won in four sets for their second title in a three-year span. In all, that made it 10 state championships under coach Chris Blake. Since 2019, only the ILH played a regular season, in the spring […]

Dancing through traffic: ‘Iolani’s Mokihana Tufono sets the tone

By Paul Honda on November 16, 2021

There is a certain kind of person who makes deliveries. A giver to the end and beyond. Someone who keeps watch and brings the goods. Just don’t be late. Be on point. For the ‘Iolani girls volleyball team, that person is Mokihana Tufono. The 5-foot-10 senior setter with a versatile array of skills — she had 16 kills, 18 assists and two blocks against Kamehameha last week — brings the will with the skill.
