Pac-Five in no-man’s land as far as state football is concerned

By Nick Abramo on March 6, 2020

Pac-Five is a team without a football state tournament to try and qualify for. The squad is in the same predicament for 2020 that it was in last year, when ILH Division II had only one team for the first time. Under Hawaii High School Athletic Association rules, a league with only one team can’t qualify for a football state berth. The same rule does not apply to baseball. This spring, the Damien baseball team is the only ILH D-II […]

Remembering 2020’s state wrestling highlights (and lowlight)

By Nick Abramo on February 26, 2020

The memory of all exciting sporting events slowly fade. So perhaps now is a good time to take a moment and reflect on all of the big moments from last weekend’s Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships before the dimmer switch starts working. Some incredible performances were turned in at Blaisdell Arena. On the opposite side of the spectrum, something not so nice occurred that should not be easily forgotten. An incident Friday that resulted in the arrest of a Leilehua wrestler […]

Three-sport star Legend Matautia trying to finish wrestling career on top

By Nick Abramo on February 22, 2020

Legend Matautia knows how to put people down — not with his words, but with his physical strength. Matautia does that during football season. In the fall, he was a senior linebacker for Punahou. This winter, he’s doing it for the Buffanblu wresting team. Matautia — the reigning 220-pound state champion — is one win away from his second crown in the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships. Early Saturday, he pinned Waianae’s Jace Filipo Rodrigues in a mere seven seconds for […]
