Longest-running state streaks through 2018-19

By Brian McInnis on May 15, 2019

Eleven team title streaks in state competition came to an end in the 2018-19 athletic calendar, but many endured and others more were created. After the dust was settled in the final competition this month, Punahou still owns the four longest active championship streaks in all HHSAA sports — girls tennis (17 straight years), girls water polo (12), boys volleyball (eight) and girls cross country (seven). However, the Buffanblu had a lengthy one, girls golf, snapped at six years at […]

Hawaii Grown: Ex-Maryknoll basketball star Justice Sueing Jr. transfers from Cal to Ohio State

By Brian McInnis on May 13, 2019

Former Maryknoll standout Justice Sueing Jr. has proven he can be a productive basketball player just about anywhere in the Western United States. Now he’s taking his talents to the East. Sueing, who played his first two years of college ball at California, recently announced he is transferring to Ohio State of the Big Ten. pic.twitter.com/THfieuu9XC — Justice Sueing (@JusticeSueing) May 11, 2019 The situation is a decided upgrade, though the 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward will have to sit out games […]

Punahou water polo wins 12th straight, shows no signs of stopping

By Brian McInnis on May 4, 2019

The inner fire of Punahou cannot be quenched in this water-based sport. Just look at Buffanblu coach Ken Smith, the 72-year-old who was a relatively young man (61) when this run of state water polo championships began in 2008. Smith nimbly leaped into the Kamehameha pool Saturday night with a push-assist from his players after they made it 12 straight for the program —— and 14 out of 16 since the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA competition began — with an 11-3 win […]

Punahou, Kamehameha gain HHSAA water polo final for fifth straight year

By Brian McInnis on May 3, 2019

Punahou-Kamehameha for all the marbles, one more time? Believe it. Embrace it. Cherish it. (Or at least the first of the three.) The Buffanblu and the Warriors are meeting up in the final of the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA water polo championships for the fifth straight year. They are like Golden State and Cleveland meeting up in the NBA Finals year after year, except it’s been even more lopsided than it was for Golden State in favor of Punahou. The Buffanblu […]

Kaiser crashes HHSAA water polo semifinals

By Brian McInnis on May 2, 2019

The Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships is objectively a great event. The action is entertaining, it’s easy to tell what’s happening (even for non-water polo aficionados) and the matches move pretty quickly. If there’s one drawback to it, it’s that the outcomes tend to be fairly predictable. Historically, it goes something like this: Punahou wins; the runner-up ILH team gives the Buffanblu a sometimes-competitive battle in the championship game; there’s a neighbor island team that proves itself […]

Kamehameha water polo rights itself in HHSAA first round

By Brian McInnis on April 30, 2019

The last time the Kamehameha girls water polo team saw official action, it was a 12-6 loss to Punahou for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship. If the Warriors are to make it five straight finals appearances in this week’s Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships, and threaten their first state title since 2006, they’ll have to shake off whatever disappointment remains from that game — and every other loss to the dynastic Buffanblu over the last decade-plus. […]

Pearl City repeats in OIA Division II volleyball

By Brian McInnis on April 24, 2019

It was a new team but the same result for Pearl City. The Chargers replaced all but a couple of players from their 2018 title team and persevered through some shaky moments to become back-to-back champions in OIA Division II volleyball with a 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 25-17 defeat of Nanakuli on Wednesday night at Radford’s Jim Alegre Gymnasium. It was the Chargers’ 12th OIA title all-time, and second in Division II. Nanakuli was denied its first OIA title. Their roster […]

Kaiser splashes through for OIA water polo title

By Brian McInnis on April 20, 2019

Kaiser made like Dory from “Finding Nemo” and just kept swimming … just kept swimming. And before long Saturday afternoon, the Cougars swam right into their first OIA water polo championship. The OIA’s top seed turned to its experience and superior swimming ability to defeat nine-time defending champion Kahuku, completing a dominant run through its league schedule (17-0). Kaiser’s girls became the first school to sweep OIA titles in swimming and diving and water polo in the same school year. […]
