Kailua comes agonizingly close to first win of season

By Brian McInnis on August 17, 2019

The Kailua Surfriders put up points for the first time in 2019 on Friday night. What they wouldn’t have done for a point or two more in a 19-18 loss to Moanalua at Alex Kane Stadium. Kailua (0-3, 0-2 OIA Division I), coming off shutout losses to Punahou (40-0) and Leilehua (14-0), showed plenty of promise against a team that was coming off a signature win — Na Menehune beat ‘Iolani for the first time ever on a walk-off field goal […]

GAME NIGHT 8/16: Moanalua/Kailua

By Brian McInnis on August 16, 2019

No. 10 Moanalua 19, Kailua 18 FINAL 10:40: Moanalua is able to take a couple knees and that does it. Na Menehune win by a point for the second straight week. 10:37: Kailua’s destiny drive is thwarted. Friel tosses one off the mark and Aukai Grace is there to snare it. Friel’s third pick comes at a very inopportune time for the hosts. Just a minute left. 10:33: Nothing doing for Moanalua. Three-and-out and the visitors are punting with 3:15 […]

Aiea discovered ground game in win over Radford

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2019

At halftime, up in the Aiea press box Friday night, a Na Alii assistant coach mused out loud that his team really, really needed to establish the run if they wanted to come back against Radford. As foreshadowing went, it was top notch. Aiea did just what he described, riding the legs of 6-foot, 190-pound junior running back Javon Miller to a 34-19 comeback win in the teams’ OIA Division I opener. Aiea, which trailed 19-7 at halftime, scored 27 […]

Fred Salanoa unbowed by defeat in return as Radford coach

By Brian McInnis on August 10, 2019

Fred Salanoa stepped away from high school football head coaching at the pinnacle of his craft. Radford defeated all comers in the 2015 season, capped with hoisting the HHSAA Division II state championship. But after his 13 years at the helm, the Rams endured some tough times after he stepped away. Their only win over the next two years came via forfeit over Kaiser in 2017. Radford was spunkier in 2018, Lon Passos’ third season, but still managed to go […]

GAME NIGHT 8/9: Radford/Aiea

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2019

Aiea 34, Radford 19, FINAL 4Q 10:50: Pau. 10:47: Castillo keeps it from 11 yards and heads to the left pylon to tack on another TD. 34-19 Aiea. What a turnaround for Na Alii. That’s 27 unanswered this half. 10:46: Aiea handing off to Miller to try to end this thing. Radford burning its last timeouts in the final minute. 10:43: Dylan Soberano comes through huge for Aiea again, as he picks off Tafisi back at about the Aiea 40 […]

Kalaheo prospect Jordan Neufeldt primed for big year

By Brian McInnis on August 3, 2019

There weren’t a whole heck of a lot of bright spots for numbers-challenged Kalaheo in its season-opening 7-0 loss to visiting Kauai High at Kailuas Alex Kane Stadium on Friday night. Really, THE bright spot was two-way senior standout Jordan Neufeldt. Neufeldt, a 6-foot-3 linebacker/tight end, made plays both ways for the Mustangs, who sought — unsuccessfully — to snap a run of losses in openers going back to 2012. Coach Darrell Poole glowed about Neufeldt before and after the game. […]

Kauai’s team bonding extends to season-opening win

By Brian McInnis on August 3, 2019

The Kauai High Red Raiders were happy campers a handful of days ago. They were smiling victors on Friday night. Kauai went camping on campus in Lihue under second-year coach Jason Apilado last weekend. Their time together did not end there, as a few days later they traveled to Oahu to take on Kalaheo at Kailua High’s Alex Kane Stadium — a return game of the 2018 opener between the teams on the Garden Isle. It was far from pretty, but […]

GAME NIGHT 8/2: Kauai/Kalaheo

By Brian McInnis on August 2, 2019

Kauai 7, Kalaheo 0, FINAL 9:35 p.m.: Akiu is sacked for a loss of 11 on fourth down. That’s all she wrote. Kauai comes over to the Gathering Place and opens its season with a 7-0 win over Kalaheo at Kailua. 9:34 p.m.: Kalaheo burns its last timeout with 57.8 seconds left and the Mustangs facing fourth and 5. 9:29 p.m.: Potentially huge turn of events with 1:18 left as Kauai fumbles on a 7-yard gain and Kalaheo’s Jonah Lene […]
