Punahou freshman Karissa Kilby entered the day with a three-shot lead and ended it with a five-shot victory in the ILH girls individual golf championship Tuesday at the Turtle Bay Fazio Course.

Kilby carded a 5-over 77 to finish the two-round tournament at 6-over 150. Hawaii Baptist’s Kelsey Ota was the runner-up at 155 after a second-round 76.

“Yeah, I was really lucky today, had a lot of good bounces,” Kilby said. “I didn’t feel like I was playing too great, but it worked out. I played good enough to make a few pars.”

Punahou’s Claire Choi, the defending ILH and state champion, was three shots behind entering the day, but wound up at 158 after a 9-over 82.

Kilby made sure to mention that she was a product of Casey Nakama‘s junior golf program at recently closed Olomana.

“It’s pretty awful that it closed,” Kilby said. “They catered to juniors and provided a friendly and save environment for us to play golf. I want to thank them (Nakama and general manager Ed Kageyama, who is also the Punahou golf coach, and others) for helping us. The discounted range balls and let us go out and play in the afternoon.”
