Maiava makes transfer to D.C. school official

Two-year Kahuku starting quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava went public late Monday night announcing he is transferring to St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C.

Maiava, who holds scholarship offers from Fresno State, Hawaii, Michigan, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia, took the Red Raiders to two OIA titles and the Open Division state final twice.

In 23 high school games, Maiava threw for 2,380 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushed for 675 yards and nine TDs.

Kahuku first-year coach Sterling Carvalho said last Monday via cellphone that the quarterback will be missed by the team.

“Because I was with the JV team during Sol-Jay’s freshman and sophomore season, I didn’t get to coach him,” Carvalho said. “Now, it looks like I’ve lost that opportunity. I was looking forward to coaching him. He fits the style that we’ll be trying to play. A lot of (read-pass option) and he has the athletic ability to create. It’s a big loss. If you lose anybody from the community that you’ve watched play Big Boyz and see them come into the program, it’s not a good feeling.”

Carvalho said he spoke with Maiava’s parents ā€” Luaao Peters and Rosemary Maiava-Peters ā€” a few weeks ago and heard from them that it was possible Sol-Jay would be transferring.

“I told the mom and dad that I wished them the best of luck and told them that he would get the love and support of the community,” he said.

Carvalho is not surprised that Maiava was recruited by a national power.

“He’s only going to get better. Watch out. He’s going to be one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks. He’s only (going to be a junior) and there’s still a lot that he’ll learn.”

Carvalho said Thorton Alapa, a backup at QB last year, is the projected starter this fall.

“He’s a tough kid and I’m excited to work with him,” Carvalho said.

    Good luck to him.

Apparently his “roots” isn’t good enough (plus stupid Admin). Hope he finds what he seeks.

    RRFL.

  2. Recruit dis April 3, 2018 7:04 am

Good luck sol jay! Best move you made to grow as a QB. Only schools in Hawaii that can get you to the next level as a Qb is mililani and St. Louis . Represent the 808 we all will be rooting for you.

  3. ILH April 3, 2018 7:48 am

Good Luck SJ. I hope you find what you are seeking at St. Johns.

    Just some thoughts-

If things dont work out, can a player return after all the social media circus??

  4. Bye April 3, 2018 7:59 am

RRFL my arse. Competition gets tough and turn tail and run. It’s ok though. Less drama from the family. Next man up. One player don’t make the whole team.

  5. mancrush April 3, 2018 8:21 am

Geeeeeeeez!!!! Does the writer of this article have a man crush on this kid or what? How many articles can you write about one decision in a month. Next topic please…Plenty of other student/athletes in the state that you could write about.

  6. rrforlifebaby April 3, 2018 8:30 am

Good luck Sol-Jay. Wished you had stayed, but wishing you the best. Looking forward to seeing you progress. The upcoming schedule for St John’s is no joke.

Keep on working and stay humble!

    RRFL!!!!

  7. Charles Amai April 3, 2018 8:38 am

Awesome Sol-Jay, Rep it HARD in DC.

RR4Lers, why so many sour comments for your kids seeking new opportunities?

How much drama would’ve went down if SJM went with John Hao and Castle?

How many all-star Kahuku Hammers didn’t get their chance because of poor coaching, recruiting, admin, etc?

People don’t quit jobs, they quit managers and soul crushing cliques.

  8. Recruit dis April 3, 2018 9:17 am

Wait I just read an article that heā€™s a 17 year old sophomore. What!!! Damn thatā€™s old.

  9. Ray Mapu April 3, 2018 10:27 am

GOODLUCK on your journey SOLJAY. For the writer of this publication, RR makes it to the top by teamwork. Makua best believe is one hell of a talent. See y’all in the playoffs AGAIN. RR4L

    @bye wow you ok?!

@ilh why wouldnā€™t anyone be able to come back?

    Go gettem jay!

  11. Tennessee79 April 3, 2018 11:26 am

Congratulations to Sol-Jay! Sending good vibes.
To all the people with their sour comments, it shows how much you would rather downgrade someone whom is improving themselves.

Some people need to keep their sarcastic opinions to themselves and congratulate this young man. Wishing him the very best always!!

  12. ??? April 3, 2018 11:28 am

At least he didnā€™t leave Kahuku hanging till summertime. Good luckšŸ¤™šŸ½

  13. Getum April 3, 2018 11:51 am

I find it so sad to read such negative comments from “supposed” football supporters. It takes a village to raise a child so JUST BE HAPPY AND PROUD OF HIM – that is the bottom line.

  14. Bye April 3, 2018 11:59 am

    Ray Mapu who’s Makua?

  15. Last Samurai April 3, 2018 12:52 pm

moving on, next QB. Brian Ah Yat will do fine coaching the QB’s up if he’s still on Staff. John Hao & Castle? why would consider going there? Coach Ah Yat is just fine. Good Luck to the boy, back to business Kahuku Football, getting ready for the season with whoever you got and wants to be there as a Red Raider.

Are there no good Quarterbacks in New Zealand, Mississippi, or where ever the road may go? I’m just saying what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

  17. Snapper April 3, 2018 4:20 pm

Good luck Sol-Jay, Anyone can play it safe and stay here. Its taking risks like leaving that will help shape you into what you want to be in the future.

If we are strictly talking sports, think about this. Yes Mariota and Milton are College Greats at this point. They “did it” here on Oahu. But if you think about it they all had tough competition in their positions where they played.

Mariota – was 2nd string to somebody else… He had to work harder.
Milton – Had a gun slinger in Gabriel coming up on his heels… He had to work harder.
Chevon (St. Louis) – Had Tua in front of him, he had to work harder.
Tua – Had Hurts in front of him, he had to work harder.

You need someone good to push you to play your best. You need a challenge, for Sol-Jay… He didn’t have to fight it out to play at Kahuku. We just don’t have a lot of kids competing in that position. So, now we have Maiava who could easily stay and start at Kahuku the next two years as the QB… But he wants to compete at his highest level. That’s great for him. Good luck.

  18. Coach C April 3, 2018 5:22 pm

Good move by the family to get SJ into a nationally ranked catholic program. For scouts to come to Hawaii from the East coast to land this talent, and still have 2 years to improve on is outstanding. Kahuku will still March on with the talent they have. After having 3 coaches in 3 seasons takes its toll on the kids. Just the fact that they show up in the last 3 State Championship games is a testiment to the smarts and caliber of these kids. (Lol,size too). Anyway good luck, let the new Open league start and be safe. P.S. Hey HPW, keep us informed as to SJ progress like Taulia”s updates from last year. It’s a testimony that the Best State QBS in the next two years will be OIA. (Gabriel,Taulia and SJ) Aloha.

What does roots have to do with anything? Will roots pay the bills? Will roots help him in school? The family made a decision. He will get exposure, play against better competition, and get better coaching. Your comment is so ignorant.

What does roots have to do with anything? Will roots pay the bills? Will roots help him in school? The family made a decision. He will get exposure, play against better competition, and get better coaching. Your comment is so ignorant.

Your logic is…well…illogical…or to put it bluntly…S.T.U.P.I.D.

    – How does changing schools half-way across the globe “pay the bills?” – It doesn’t. It’s just going to another school that actually incurs more costs. Duh.
    – How does it “help him in school?” – It doesn’t. Kids and their parents HELP THEMSELVES in school by focusing on the academics and not blaming the school/teachers/etc. (ex: Samson). Duh.
    – How does it “get exposure, play against better competition, and get better coaching”? It doesn’t.
    – FACT. Kahuku is a nationally recognized football program that has put more players in the NFL…than ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL.
    – FACT: with the new OIA-ILH merger schedule, Kahuku will be playing in a tougher league TOP TO BOTTOM than 99% of ANY LEAGUE/TIER in the country. I know – I live in the mainland where 1A thru 7A leagues MIGHT have 1-3 good teams at the top of each level…but NOT throughout the entire tier
    – FACT: if Kahuku’s coaches are so bad…why have they played in the State Championship game for the last 3 years??? It’s not only talent (pssst – they were completely out-manned ‘talent-wise’ in last years championship game…at almost every position…how did they almost beat one of the best overall talented teams to ever be put together?…and I mean STACKED…? Yeah…COACHING).

DUH. go back school and take some logic classes…so you don’t get come up in here and get shredded again.

    RRFL.

  24. TooMeke April 4, 2018 8:20 am

and…oh yeah…look at the original post… SJ was the one who used “roots” initially… so go ask him first….k?

    duuuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh…

  25. PSA April 4, 2018 9:41 am

ā€“ FACT. Kahuku is a nationally recognized football program that has put more players in the NFLā€¦than ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL.

Actually, Kahuku at one time had the most Active NFL football players from one high school. It was cool but is not the same thing as what your saying is a “FACT”.

ā€“ FACT: ā€¦how did they almost beat one of the best overall talented teams to ever be put together?ā€¦and I mean STACKEDā€¦? Yeahā€¦COACHING).

Just my opinion… This years STL would have got their butts kicked from last years STL… Tua would have picked apart his own D. Noa Purcell, would have kept Chevon in check.

  26. TooMeke April 4, 2018 11:06 am

Okay…2ND MOST NFL PLAYERS…behind St Thomas Aquinas…by ONE.

    http://www.maxpreps.com/news/rtk0-D08zUqiamc4NnPQ_w/high-schools-that-have-produced-the-most-nfl-draft-picks.htm

    https://www.si.com/high-school/2017/10/25/kahuku-high-school-red-raiders-football

…and Tua was a one man show. go look at the stats and tape. he was scrambling for his life most of the time because of a not-so-good O-line. it was his scrambling that won the championship. last years STL team was stacked at every position…including every O-line position…except for RB.

  27. PSA April 4, 2018 4:28 pm

TooMeke, your mistaken again… Here are the stats…

    2016 Championship – Tua – 243 passing and 136 rushing…
    2015 Championship – Tua – 191 passing and -1 rushing…

Not to mention the 2015 hurries, and sacks… He came back the next year we had no pressure on him he sat back and threw and ran well.

Like I said, that 2016 team would have SASA’d the 2017 STL team… Hard! I also think that the 2015 Kahuku team would have shutdown your 2017 STL team too.

  28. Too Meke 2 April 4, 2018 4:31 pm

Sir, you are pathetic. You spend so much time on here talking about kids. Kind of worries me. Let’s dissect what you say below……….

ā€“ FACT. Kahuku is a nationally recognized football program that has put more players in the NFLā€¦than ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL. (DO YOU HAVE ANY EVIDENCE TO AUTHENTICATE THIS STATEMENT?)

ā€“ FACT: with the new OIA-ILH merger schedule, Kahuku will be playing in a tougher league TOP TO BOTTOM than 99% of ANY LEAGUE/TIER in the country. I know ā€“ I live in the mainland where 1A thru 7A leagues MIGHT have 1-3 good teams at the top of each levelā€¦but NOT throughout the entire tier. (THERE IS NOT SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO COMPARE LEAGUES AND QUALITY OF SCHEDULES. THERE ARE TOO MANY VARIABLES. HENCE, THIS IS AN OPINION. IT’S IRRELEVANT WHERE YOU LIVE. AS FOR 99%, ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT YOU DID THE MATH COMPARING ALL OF THE SCHEDULES FOR SCHOOL IN THE US? MANY LEAGUES HAVE NOT COME OUT WITH THEIR FOOTBALL SCHEDULES YET. SO GIVEN THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE ALL OF THE NUMBERS NEEDED TO COMPARE, HOW CAN YOU COME UP WITH 99%?)

ā€“ FACT: if Kahukuā€™s coaches are so badā€¦why have they played in the State Championship game for the last 3 years??? Itā€™s not only talent (pssst ā€“ they were completely out-manned ā€˜talent-wiseā€™ in last years championship gameā€¦at almost every positionā€¦how did they almost beat one of the best overall talented teams to ever be put together?ā€¦and I mean STACKEDā€¦? Yeahā€¦COACHING). – (ONCE AGAIN THIS IS AN OPINION. A FACT IS HUMANS NEED OXYGEN TO LIVE. ANOTHER FACT IS HUMAN BEINGS NEED FOOD TO LIVE. THERE IS NO FACT LISTED IN YOUR STATEMENT ABOVE. AND YOU ARE TELLING ME I LACK LOGIC? LOL.)

DUH. go back school and take some logic classesā€¦so you donā€™t get come up in here and get shredded again.

    RRFL.

I LOVE WHEN PEOPLE LIKE TOO MEKE TRY TO WRITE LIKE HE’S EDUCATED. SIR, YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACT AND AN OPINION. YOU HAVE BEEN EXPOSED. DON’T THEY TEACH CHILDREN IN GRADE 2 OR 3 THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACT AND OPINION?

IT SEEMS YOU MISSED THAT LESSON. MAYBE ASK ONE OF THE KIDS IN YOUR COMMUNITY TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF LESSON TO BRUSH UP YOUR SKILLS. YOU ARE CLEARLY LACKING GENERAL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT A FACT IS BASED ON WHAT YOU ATTEMPTED TO WRITE EARLIER.

    99%, BWWWAAAHHAHAHAH!!!

  29. Too Meke 2 April 4, 2018 4:33 pm

TOO MEKE = CLOWN OF THIS BLOG

    HAHAHHAHA!

I MAY LACK LOGIC. BUT AT LEAST I KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACT AND AN OPINION.

  30. Butta April 4, 2018 9:08 pm

@PSA, no worries bro. Too Meke just pulls crap out his crack. He’s hoping no one checks on up his rambling and incorrect info.

@ Too Meke 2. Good one bro! The boy doesn’t seem to know what a fact is. F’in classic!

  31. TooMeke April 5, 2018 5:23 am

FACT: Too Meke 2 couldn’t come up with his own name…too overwhelming of a task.

    HA!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about “F’in classic!”

And Butta changed his name from Burnt Toast (as he was known by when he tried to play in the secondary in his hannabutta days…) lmao… another “F’in classic!”

  32. Too Meke 2 April 5, 2018 9:37 am

You are so smart TooMeke. I used your name as flattery. Nah, more like sarcasm. So at the very least I am unoriginal.

But, at least I know what a FACT is, haha! I find it highly interesting that you haven’t commented back to me on that.

So keep calling people names and trying to be funny. But the only funny thing happening is an old man (TooMeke) doesn’t know the definition of what a fact is. And then he comes on here insulting people from a lack of logic to being unoriginal to lack of intelligence.

Yet he is the one as a 65 year old who doesn’t know what a fact is.

Here is a free tip for you. Before you come back on here please click on dictionary.com and type in the word F-A-C-T then press enter. Please read the definition and have grandson or granddaughter decipher it and explain it to you.

  33. Too Meke 2 April 5, 2018 9:38 am

FACT: Too Meke 2 couldnā€™t come up with his own nameā€¦too overwhelming of a task.

    HA!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about ā€œFā€™in classic!ā€

BWWWWAAHHHH! This is the best TooMeke could come back with after pondering what to write after hours and hours.

No wonder he doesn’t know what a FACT is.

  34. T103 April 5, 2018 10:35 am

U guys super lame. I mean to say this team of whatever year would beat that team from that year makes no point. Even if could, doesn’t even matter b/c right now is right now and thats all that matters. Would love to hear what ‘anywaaaaay’ has to say about his boy transferring to DC. Probably would diss the family for not being ‘loyal’ to community or whatevers. but he silent yea. all I hear is crickets…..

  35. Too Meke 2 April 5, 2018 12:34 pm

@T103, didn’t you know that anywaaays and TooMeke are the same person? Both are ridiculous. Both are hypocrites. And both of them do not know what a FACT is.

No worries one of his aliases will show up soon. Guarantee!
