Two-year Kahuku starting quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava went public late Monday night announcing he is transferring to St. John’s College High School in Washington D.C.

Maiava, who holds scholarship offers from Fresno State, Hawaii, Michigan, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia, took the Red Raiders to two OIA titles and the Open Division state final twice.
In 23 high school games, Maiava threw for 2,380 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushed for 675 yards and nine TDs.
Kahuku first-year coach Sterling Carvalho said last Monday via cellphone that the quarterback will be missed by the team.
“Because I was with the JV team during Sol-Jay’s freshman and sophomore season, I didn’t get to coach him,” Carvalho said. “Now, it looks like I’ve lost that opportunity. I was looking forward to coaching him. He fits the style that we’ll be trying to play. A lot of (read-pass option) and he has the athletic ability to create. It’s a big loss. If you lose anybody from the community that you’ve watched play Big Boyz and see them come into the program, it’s not a good feeling.”
Carvalho said he spoke with Maiava’s parents ā Luaao Peters and Rosemary Maiava-Peters ā a few weeks ago and heard from them that it was possible Sol-Jay would be transferring.
“I told the mom and dad that I wished them the best of luck and told them that he would get the love and support of the community,” he said.
Carvalho is not surprised that Maiava was recruited by a national power.
“He’s only going to get better. Watch out. He’s going to be one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks. He’s only (going to be a junior) and there’s still a lot that he’ll learn.”
Carvalho said Thorton Alapa, a backup at QB last year, is the projected starter this fall.
“He’s a tough kid and I’m excited to work with him,” Carvalho said.

Good luck Sol-Jay, Anyone can play it safe and stay here. Its taking risks like leaving that will help shape you into what you want to be in the future.
If we are strictly talking sports, think about this. Yes Mariota and Milton are College Greats at this point. They “did it” here on Oahu. But if you think about it they all had tough competition in their positions where they played.
Mariota – was 2nd string to somebody else… He had to work harder.
Milton – Had a gun slinger in Gabriel coming up on his heels… He had to work harder.
Chevon (St. Louis) – Had Tua in front of him, he had to work harder.
Tua – Had Hurts in front of him, he had to work harder.
You need someone good to push you to play your best. You need a challenge, for Sol-Jay… He didn’t have to fight it out to play at Kahuku. We just don’t have a lot of kids competing in that position. So, now we have Maiava who could easily stay and start at Kahuku the next two years as the QB… But he wants to compete at his highest level. That’s great for him. Good luck.
Good move by the family to get SJ into a nationally ranked catholic program. For scouts to come to Hawaii from the East coast to land this talent, and still have 2 years to improve on is outstanding. Kahuku will still March on with the talent they have. After having 3 coaches in 3 seasons takes its toll on the kids. Just the fact that they show up in the last 3 State Championship games is a testiment to the smarts and caliber of these kids. (Lol,size too). – How does changing schools half-way across the globe “pay the bills?” – It doesn’t. It’s just going to another school that actually incurs more costs. Duh.

…and Tua was a one man show. go look at the stats and tape. he was scrambling for his life most of the time because of a not-so-good O-line. it was his scrambling that won the championship. last years STL team was stacked at every position…including every O-line position…except for RB.

2016 Championship – Tua – 243 passing and 136 rushing…
2015 Championship – Tua – 191 passing and -1 rushing…
Not to mention the 2015 hurries, and sacks… He came back the next year we had no pressure on him he sat back and threw and ran well.
Like I said, that 2016 team would have SASA’d the 2017 STL team… Hard! I also think that the 2015 Kahuku team would have shutdown your 2017 STL team too.
