Baldwin is in position to win its first-ever girls team title at the Texaco/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships.
The Bears, who finished fourth last year, can keep the title on Maui after Lahainaluna won it last year.
They scored 81 points on the first day, followed by Moanalua (71) and Kamehameha (69). Pearl City is right behind with 68.
Baldwin has nine girls still alive and six of them still have shots at individual titles. Only Pearl City has as many girls in the semifinals and Moanalua is the only school with as many entrants still wrestling.
The Bears won’t get a shot a knocking out any Na Menehune when wrestling begins in the morning and there is no chance of a big finish of a Baldwin and Moanalua girl in a state final.
The race in the early going figures to be between Kamehameha and Moanalua for the chance to nuzzle up to the Bears. It begins with Kira Borengasser of Moanalua and Alana Vivas of Kamehameha in the 117 semis.
