The future is now at the Pa’ani Challenge at Punahou.
The tournament is underway with most of the big names sitting out but a possible elite level clash in the semifinals of the 107-pound bracket.
Lahainaluna’s Ira Navarro and Tianna Fernandez of Baldwin share that group, with Navarro facing Kolbey Low of Kealakehe in the first round and Moanalua’s Jenna Justo in the second if she advances. The winner of that match gets either Majesty Terukina of Campbell or Fernandez in the semifinals.
Both Maui wrestlers won the Officials tournament last month, with Navarro taking the 102-pound class and Fernandez cleaning up at 107.
Lahainaluna’s Nanea Estrella doesn’t have any ranked wrestlers in her weight class at 132, but could meet Roselani Ikei of Kaiser in the semifinals.
Tiare Ikei of Kaiser is in the 112-pound bracket and looks to have an easy road to the title. Navarro and Ikei are the only girls going for a repeat in the Open division this year.
The most stacked bracket appears to be 138, where Jahnei Miguel of Baldwin, Lahainaluna’s Kauanoe Keahi and Paige Respicio of Kamehameha all reside. Respicio upset Miguel at Officials. They would meet in the semifinals with Keahi waiting in the final if she can get through her side.
Another big clash could occur at 184 pounds, where Baldwin’s Siera Vida and Roxie Umu of Kealakehe are on opposite sides of the bracket.

>> Viviana Barcina of Kahuku and Kalani’s Cherise Horita won with quick pins and will meet tomorrow. Barcina dispatched Kelly Spencer of Waianae in 1:46 and Horita stuck Keja Logan of Kealakehe in 1:13.
>> Taylor Pelegrino Hayase of Lahainaluna stopped Kamehameha’s Precious Brown in 1:08, she will meet Faith Joy Okubo of Moanalua tomorrow.
>> Umu needed only 54 seconds to pin Saje Pedroza Kanemitsu of KS-Maui, Alana Dela Pena of Moanalua is up next for her.
>> Leilehua’s Shantelle Mangrobang pinned Jennifer Gallardo in 33 seconds and Kalani’s Rosalyn Kagimoto needed just 59 seconds to pin Leilani Samoy of Kahuku. They will face each other tomorrow.
