Gap widens ahead of OIA title game

Kahuku defrensive end Bradlee Anae (99) helped tackle a Mililani player in the 2015 OIA title game. The Red Raiders did not give up a point on defense in a 20-7 victory. Jamm Aquino / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

There were no changes in the latest Honolulu Star-Advertiser football rankings this week.

Waipahu remained at No. 9 after holding off a pesky Pearl City squad, 23-22, in the OIA Division II championship game last Thursday. In the only other game played last week, Damien held off St. Francis, 13-12, to win the ILH Division II championship.

The Monarchs, who earlier this season were ranked in the top 10 of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser poll for the first time ever, earned seven votes this week, two shy of No. 10 Hilo.

The Vikings are the only ranked team competing in the Division I state tournament. Two Division II teams (Lahainaluna, Waipahu) are ranked.

The only other thing of note in this week’s rankings is the gap between No. 2 Mililani and No. 3 Kahuku widened. The Trojans received eight of 10 second-place votes while Kahuku received the other two.

Saint Louis was once again the unanimous No. 1 team.

The Red Raiders are 11-2 all-time against the Trojans, but Mililani has won two of the last three meetings heading into Saturday’s OIA title tilt at Aloha Stadium.

The Trojans beat Kahuku, 37-22, in the OIA semifinals in 2013 and held off the Red Raiders, 20-7, to win the 2014 OIA championship.

Kahuku came back in 2015 and won the OIA title game by the exact same score over the Trojans, 20-7. Then-freshman Dillon Gabriel started at quarterback with McKenzie Milton out and suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter.

Current Hawaii defensive back Keala Santiago intercepted three passes in the game for Kahuku.

@simplesimon, that question is irrelevant cause past opponents will not effect future results.

@hauulaboy, Mililani and St. Louis crowd can be on the same side and still not have the spirit red raiders travel with.

Toomeke- there you go again talking all that crap but don’t know nothing about football. How you gonna say that St. Louis wouldn’t beat Bingham . That’s why the game is played and every team matches up different. But you wouldn’t know that because you know nothing about football. If kahuku played narbonne they wouldn’t score 50 points it would be a low scoring game because of the matchup. Just shaddup and let the games be played then let’s see who’s talking shit after. You still owe me 2 lunches because you taught punahou was gonna smash St. Louis twice and you wasn’t even close. Lmao

St LuLu is gonna get rolled. No running game…no championship. End of story. Go take your butt-hurt elsewhere – and watch your language – lol – cannot even control your fingers…even when your team is in 1st place – poor sport sore winner – LMAOOOOOOO!!!
