Hard-fought league races were the norm in girls volleyball and now it’s time for more fun at this week’s state tournament.
Le Jardin (13-1), anchored at No. 7 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 throughout most of the season, finally moved up a peg to No. 6. The Bulldogs’ run to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II championship got sidetracked temporarily in a five-seat loss to Damien, but they came back to top the Monarchs in four in the title match.
Moanalua (14-0), by virtue of its undefeated Oahu Interscholastic Association undefeated season, inched past Maryknoll (4-8) to No. 4.
Kapolei (12-1), which lost to Moanalua in the OIA title match, dropped one place to No. 7, where Le Jardin had been stationed.
Two new teams entered the poll. Waiakea (16-2), which survived a three-way battle with Hilo and Kamehameha-Hawaii in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation to take the championship, checked in at No. 9.
Damien (11-6), due to its never-say-die performances against Le Jardin, earned the No. 10 spot.
Two teams — MIL D-II champion Seabury Hall (14-0) and Hilo (16-2, second place in BIIF D-I) — dropped out of the Top 10.
The top three teams remained the same — No. 1 Kamehameha (10-2), No. 2 ‘Iolani (6-7) and No. 3 Punahou (5-8).
