Kapolei front four still bringing heat on Matsunami, who escapes pressure, but his pass goes through the fingers of a receiver and is intercepted by Landon Shove, who returns it about 20 yards to the Aiea 20.

Kapolei 41, Aiea 0, 5:57, 4Q

Freshman Sonny Semeatu turns the corner and he’s gone for a 43-yard TD. This comes one play after RB Antoneo Filipo-Brown left the field with an injury.

THIRD QUARTER ENDS
Aiea has the ball at its 36-yard line, second and 8 as the quarter ends.

Kapolei 34, Aiea 0, :23, 3Q

Reserve QB Kaniala Kalaola is after Aiea’s 9-yard punt goes out at the Aiea 30. Solomon Suan rambles for 28 yards and Kalaola scrambles for an easy 2-yard TD run.

Faoa is 24-for-35, 240 yards and two TDs with no picks. Very clean game, very low-risk passes, even on fourth down. Titus Mokiao-Atimalala has 10 receptions for 126 yards and one TD. Four sacks by the Hurricanes total.

Kapolei 27, Aiea 0, 2:08, 3Q

Kapolei lines up in the power-I again and it’s Toilolo showing his RB skills. He gains 8, then a big gain called back by holding, again on the left side. He runs for 17, and an Aiea person foul advances the ball to the Kapolei 37. Then it’s a toss sweep left for 27 yards by Toilolo. Who knew? Kansana takes over and later has a 12-yard reception to set up his own 3-yard TD run, but an O-lineman is injured. PAT kick misses.

Aiea drives to the Kapolei 47, helped by a 15-yard penalty, but again, the drive stalls. Here’s a 50-yard punt out at the Kapolei 1-yard line.

Kapolei drives to the 19, but the drive stalls. Aiea ball at its 19.

Hurricanes closing in on Matsunami as the second half begins. He’s got nowhere to scramble, all short routes closed off, no time to get the ball deep and he’s on his horse with no one open. Punt goes for 5 yards, out at midfield. Kapolei ball.

Kapolei 21, Aiea 0, :57, 2Q

Kapolei drives to the 15, fourth and 1, time out. Dylan Toilolo, their standout safety, enters as the tailback in a power-I formation and runs 4 yards for a first down. Then he gains 15 yards to the 3 on a toss sweep left, but again, it’s a holding call on a run to the left by the ‘Canes. Two plays later, Faoa hits Ransen Pasion in the flat and he races across the goal line for a 3-yard TD.

Aiea having more difficulty with each series. Matsunami is sacked twice, by Peni Naulu, then Rydre Serna-Ames as Na Alii go three and out. Punt downed at the Aiea 40.

Kapolei 14, Aiea 0, 5:58, 2Q

Josh Kansana bulls his way into the end zone on a 15-yard run. This comes after two of his gains earlier in the game were brought back by holding penalties. Lot of folks here happy for Kansana, who has overcome two ACL injuries, and his mother passed away last year.

Aiea gets a 15-yard scramble by QB Ty Matsunami, but the drive stalls and the punt is downed at the Kapolei 36. Hurricanes very basic right now, Cover 2, all vanilla, just keeping Aiea in front and not allowing the big play. It’s working.

Kapolei 7, Aiea 0, 11:52, 2Q

First play of the second quarter, Faoa fires a quick pass to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala, who spins through two tacklers and leans over the goal line for the game’s first touchdown, a 2-yard play.

FIRST QUARTER ENDS
Hold it. Kapolei’s offense is back on the field, ball has moved to the Aiea 27. A 16-yard penalty, no indication on the penalty. Faoa 25-yard completion to the 2-yard line as the quarter ends.

Kapolei has momentum with three completions in a row by Lonenoa Faoa, but three penalties derail the drive and it’s a punt downed at the Aiea 10. Two procedures and one hold on a third and 3. Rare to see holding on a run play. Trying too hard to be perfect. Aiea’s D-line, led by DT Ferenisi Lualemana, is solid so far.

Aiea drives and stalls at the Kapolei 26. Turnover on downs.

Kapolei drives and stalls at the Aiea 33. Turnover on downs.

Pre-game
Coin toss — no mic on the head official, but Aiea will receive the opening kickoff. Kapolei is defending the makai end zone. Kapolei dressed in teal jerseys and pants, black helmets. Aiea wearing white jerseys with pink shoulder-area coloring, white pants and their usual forest green helmets. It’s breast cancer awareness month, and this is their way of recognizing victims and survivors.
