The opening of Kamehameha’s Big Island campus in 2004 stirred up a hornet’s nest of sorts over the years.
In multiple sports, coaches at other BIIF schools, particularly the smaller programs, bemoaned the loss of talented athletes to the presence of Kamehameha-Hawaii. It couldn’t be stopped, of course. The campus is nothing short of beautiful, more akin to a pristine small college than a typical high school.
Waiakea was never a small-enrollment school, but the effects of KS-Hawaii’s allure is felt all across Hawaii Island. Since KS-Hawaii opened its varsity program in ’04, it has been the private-school Warriors who have ruled the gridiron in this series. KS-Hawaii has won eight in a row, last losing to Waiakea in 2009. For the series, KS-Hawaii has won 11 of 12 meetings.
The two schools meet on Saturday at Waiakea. KS-Hawaii is 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the BIIF while Waiakea is 1-5 and 0-3.
