GAME NIGHT 8/5: Lahainaluna/Pearl City

8:56: FINAL SCORE — LAHAINALUNA 20, PEARL CITY 7.

8:54: Dallas Ching makes three straight receptions for the Chargers for 21 yards, but they eventually lose the ball on downs.

8:50: Kasey Kikuyama runs for 28 yards and then 11 yards for two first downs. A penalty on the Lunas pushes the ball to midfield.


8:45: The Lunas don’t move and punt. 2:44 remaining. Pearl City ball at its own 10.

8:41: Lahainaluna picks up just 7 yards and also loses the ball on downs. But the Lunas get it right back, thanks to their third interception of the game — by Kamalei Watson.

8:38: The Lunas are in complete control. The Chargers are tiring. A sack by the Lunas’ Dylan Smith leads to a Pearl City punt.

8:34: Lahainaluna’s Bailey Honda intercepts an Asinsin pass, giving the ball at the Pearl City 40, but the Lunas can’t convert it into points and lose the ball on downs.

8:27: The Lunas lose yardage and punt it away.

8:22: END THIRD QUARTER. LAHAINALUNA 20, PEARL CITY 7.

8:21: Lahainaluna’s Tuipulotu Lai strips Pearl City’s Asinsin of the ball and Pokipala-Waiohu recovers at the Chargers’ 32.

8:14: The outside running by the Lunas is causing trouble for the Pearl City defense. Pihda gains 9 yards with a sweep left and then Storer fakes a handoff to the outside and goes up the middle for a 6-yard touchdown. Ragudo sweeps right for the two-point conversion. LAHAINALUNA 20, PEARL CITY 7, 2:38 left in the third quarter.

8:11: Tihada’s 18-yard run and two 15-yard Pearl City penalties give Lahainaluna the ball all the way at the Chargers’ 19.

8:06: The Chargers don’t take advantage of the turnover and wind up punting. The ball goes into the end zone and Lahainaluna starts at its 20.

8:03: Pearl City’s first drive of the second half stalls early and the Chargers punt. But Lahainaluna’s Aliksa Pihda muffs the punt and Burkhardt Aitavale recovers for Pearl City at the Lunas’ 28.

7:59: After six plays and two first downs, Lahainaluna’s Elijah Ragudo takes an option handoff around left end, picks up speed and twirls around a would-be defender for a 33-yard touchdown run. The Lunas take the lead for the first time in the game, but Storer’s two-point run fails. LAHAINALUNA 12, PEARL CITY 7, 9:12 left in the third quarter.

7:43: Total scrimmage yards is close at the half. Pearl City 78 to Lahainaluna’s 52. The Chargers lead the turnover battle 2-1.

7:35: END FIRST HALF. PEARL CITY 7, LAHAINALUNA 6.

7:33: The Lunas decide to punt and a sky high punt goes for 2 yards. Pearl City takes over on its own 36.

7:31: Lahainaluna is facing fourth down and 10 from the 38 with 1:13 left in the first half.

7:28: Punter Zion Tupuola-Fetui runs to his right and gets a low, line-drive punt. Lahainaluna has great field position at the Pearl City 38.

7:27: The Chargers can’t gain ground on three downs and will be punting with 2:02 to go in the half. Lahainaluna calls timeout.

7:23: Two plays later, Joshua Tihada goes around right end for a 6-yard touchdown. The Lunas, however, can’t add to the total due to a bad snap on the point-after attempt. PEARL CITY 7, LAHAINALUNA 6, 3:16 left in the first half.

7:20: Lahainaluna is driving. Storer keeps an option play for 12 yards and a first down. Storer finds Kai Bookland for a 10-yard gain and then hits Kawehi Gilcoat for a 7-yard gain to the Pearl City 7.

7:18: Pearl City defensive lineman Sione Uluave is down, gets attention from the medical staff and limps off the field with help.


7:16: Nyles Pokipala-Waiohu takes a few snaps at QB for Lahainaluna

7:11: Asinin’s QB sneak on fourth down fails and the Lunas take over on their own 39.

7:09: After a 15-yard Lahainaluna penalty, Storer is intercepted by Pearl City’s Kasey Kikuyama.

7:08: Pearl City goes nowhere and punts.

7:02: END 1ST QUARTER. PEARL CITY 7, LAHAINALUNA 0.

6:58: Pearl City defense comes up big as running back Aliksa Pihda is thrown for a 9-yard loss and Storer is sacked for 12 yards. Chargers take over on downs at their own 45.

6:55: Storer is back in at quarterback. Dean Miyamoto picks up a first down with a 9-yard run. Ball is at the Pearl City 33.

6:54: Siale Hafoka picks off an Asinsin pass and the Lunas take over on the Pearl City 47.

6:51: The Lunas go three and out and punt. Nainoa Irish took a turn as an option quarterback.

6:48: Elijah Ragudo returns the Pearl City kick 57 yards to the Chargers’ 32 for Lahainaluna, but the play is nullified by offsetting penalties. There will be a re-kick.

6:45: On second down, Asinsin keeps it for a 1-yard touchdown run. Zameer Kahn kicks the extra point. PEARL CITY 7, LAHAINALUNA 0, 6:20 left in the first quarter.

6:44: Kobe Jackson takes a screen pass from Asinsin 20 yards to the Lahainaluna 1.

6:41: On Lahainaluna’s first play, quarterback Etuati Storer throws a pass that is picked off by the Chargers’ Aidan Fernandes. Pearl City ball at the Lunas’ 21.

6:38: Thomas King is open on a midrange pass, but drops the ball. Pearl City punts.

6:36: Quarterback Isaiah Asinsin gets the Chargers’ first first down with a quarterback sneak. Ball is just over midfield.

6:31: Pearl City will receive the kickoff. Lahainaluna will defend the North end zone.

6:20: We’re about 15 minutes away from kickoff. The teams are on the field warming up. Pearl City won the JV game against Radford, 30-14.

The defending Division II state champion Lunas begin their title defense on Oahu with a trip to Pearl City to take on the Chargers, who are looking to make the state tournament for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 2013 and ’14.
