The Punahou softball team is hanging with some of the best programs in Arizona this week.

The Buffanblu beat Mountain Ridge 8-4 to reach the semifinals of the Desert Mountain Softball Invitational in Arizona on Friday. Punahou pitcher Bailey Akimseu surrendered a three-run home run in the first inning but erased it with a three-run shot of her own in the bottom of the inning.

Jolie Fujita added two RBIs with a single in the fourth inning to give the Buffanblu the cushion they needed. Akimseu settled down in the circle to allow Mountain Ridge only a single run the rest of the way.

Punahou plays Pinnacle (Ariz.) in today’s semifinals. Pinnacle finished the tournament in second place last year. Desert Vista and Hamilton are in the other semifinal.

Hamilton is the reigning Arizona Division I state champion and Desert Vista is the defending tournament champion.

The tournament championship immediately follows the semifinals.
