All-State Fab 15 selection Molimau Heimuli and teammate Chantal Mailou led Farrington to an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls basketball championship last month.
In a few more months, Heimuli and Mailou will be en route to Paris Junior College in Texas to continue their playing careers. Heimuli, a 5-foot-11 guard/forward, was voted No. 4 in the Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15 by coaches and media. Versatility across the court and power in the paint make Heimuli an elite prospect. Coaches locally consider her at college Division I talent, but she didn’t qualify by NCAA standards.
Heimuli is a left-hander who wowed fans with her ambidextrous post shooting, point-guard level ballhandling skills and tremendous endurance. The senior averaged more than 21 points per game for Farrington (16-5).
Mailou, a 5-6 guard with strong defensive chops and 3-point range, averaged nearly eight points per game. She was an honorable-mention selection for all-state.
Former Lady Governor Penina Faumui played at national powerhouse Blinn College, also in Texas. Faumui averaged 9.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in conference play last year. That sparked second-year Paris coach Gonzalo Garza to get help from the islands for his team, which is 5-21 overall, 2-15 in the Region IV Athletic Conference.
“He saw our Penina at Blinn play against his teams and he wanted to get ladies similar to her, tough with heart and passionate about playing,” Farrington vice-principal Ronald Oyama said.
Faumui now plays at Texas A&M-Commerce, which plays in the Lone Star Conference.
