After nine years at his dream coaching gig, the era of Amosa Amosa as Campbell football coach has come to a close.

Here is the full story in Wednesday’s Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Amosa got the news today, stepping down after Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes indicated that the program “will go in a different direction.”

The Sabers, who finished second in the OIA Blue (Division I) during the regular season, lost to Farrington in the league playoffs. Campbell reached the semifinals of the D-I state tournament, falling to ‘Iolani. They were 7-5 this season.

Amosa’s career record is 56-41, all at Campbell. Delos Reyes was not available for comment.

“I’m so blessed. I’m at peace,” Amosa said on Tuesday afternoon. “I have no regrets. I’d like to hope we left the program in a better state and took it to a new level with our campus and our community.”

He had the chance to tell his team Tuesday afternoon before the news broke. They met in the gym.

“It’s beautiful what the kids did. They did the haka for me, one last time,” he said. “I got to hug them and give them advice. When one player goes down, the next one carries the torch. I’ll be gone, but they will keep their heads up and continue to work hard, work with their new coach. I don’t want any of them to get down. I always talked to them every day, always told them how much I appreciate you, how much I love my job, because the day might come when I’m not the coach.”

    Good luck coach!

Every school is cleaning house.. If you not taking the program to another level then you gotta go.

  5. Mason December 13, 2016 5:41 pm

I hope Walter Young is next!

  6. Chloropicrin December 13, 2016 5:44 pm

Wow, so is Sam delos Reyes taking over? One bad season and they “going in a different direction”… he’s a good coach, good luck.

  7. Chloropicrin December 13, 2016 5:45 pm

@Mason I think Walter is the guy, but they need to clean house, get a real OC and coaches who didn’t graduate from school the last few years. Make everyone apply.

  8. WinloseortieCRUSADERtilIdie December 13, 2016 6:41 pm

Wow, first Maeda, now Amosa? Two highly respected coaches won’t be in familiar positions next year. Both very honorable men and coaches. Wishing the best! Come Kapolei!

  9. TheHeartlessPrick December 13, 2016 7:09 pm

Amazing how Coaches like Hernandez & Okimoto accomplish nothing in their long careers & still remain HC. I just don’t get it.

  10. Bumbuchas December 13, 2016 7:22 pm

Wow! Selected Coach of the Year D1 Blue Conference! Pastor, Educator, Man of high moral character, sheesh! The game has long past Sam Delos Reyes, he needed to have retired years ago. Worse yet, he’s a former FB Coach, though not a very good one. Who would want to coach under an Administration as such? Interested Coaches better do their due diligence.

  11. AllHail December 13, 2016 9:27 pm

@Mason Wow. Waianae has been doing really well the last few seasons.

It’s a sad day in Ewa Beach for our Saber footall boys and our beautiful community. Coach Amosa is such a humble god driven person that knows exactly how to motivate and inspire all of the young men he has had the privilege to work with for all these years. He has dedicated his life to the Sabers since I was in highschool and now for my children. My opinion is if Campbell waneed to take a different direction we should’ve got a new AD instead. Maybe then our football program could actually get the funds they truly need. Coach Amosa will be truly missed. #teamamosa #saberscoach

I believe Mr. Amosa is a teacher at Campbell also. So he won’t be that far removed. Albeit it will be a strange feeling. Best wishes coach!

  14. TopDoggs December 13, 2016 10:04 pm

Just putting it out there but it seems that a lot of Ewa players are playing at Kapolei or St. Louis. The ILH is always a better choice but Kapolei?

I cannot understand what is happening with high school sports in Hawaii. It seems administrators are far too concerned with the success of their athletic teams when their concern should be on academics. Why change a coach that has been successful. Maybe it’s time to replace principals.

  16. MaurauderF8ful December 14, 2016 5:28 am

Sam Delos Reyes shenanigans again…Lose $$$. Maybe should change the Athletic Director. Good Luck Coach Amosa.

  17. Waywardpineapple75 December 14, 2016 6:19 am

I don’t know all the factors, but there is something going on I dont know if the admin, community, or what is the catalyst…maybe winning is the bottom line!!! IDK.

One of the best coaches I have ever seen, including both NCAA Division I and Hawaii High School. Master of the Run and Shoot, coaching the technical ballet of pass protection, but most importantly, appreciated and respected by his students and student athletes. Cant help but agree with MarauderF8ful, Lose $$$

  19. TooMeke December 14, 2016 8:06 am

We always looking for great coaches to help our student-athletes at Kahuku.

Amazing the ‘office politics’ in HS sports these days.

    Castle… now Campbell… who’s next?

    Good luck Coach!

  20. Malopipo December 14, 2016 9:50 am

take over Farrington they need a change badly..waste of talented players every year under current head coach!!!

  21. Malopipo December 14, 2016 9:55 am

SAM DELO REYES dont know crap about football… you need to go!!.
    Good luck Mosa!!!

  22. ??? December 14, 2016 10:26 am

Back to Aiea where you and Mika Liilii did an awesome job.
God Bless you and your Aiga…..

  23. OGRRFL December 14, 2016 2:17 pm

Kapolei needs you coach! Or come to Kahuku

  24. Bout time December 14, 2016 2:56 pm

So that means, no more favoritism. Kids can now play in there home town and not have to transfer to play. Kids don’t have to worry about the coaches kid or family taking their spot even though they were better at that position. Thank God, best of luck to you crotch. I’m mean coach.

  25. BK December 14, 2016 4:53 pm

I think all OIA coaches should join a Union. AD’s are protected but not Coaches! Sound familiar Delos Reyes?!?!?

  26. BK December 14, 2016 5:02 pm

Kapolei and Govs HC jobs are safe cuz AD’s and Principals protect them. There’s a FB petition to get rid of Govs coach. Many Kapolei people want a change of DH, on TV too much!

  27. Mahatma Gandhi December 14, 2016 5:02 pm

Malopipo, Sam De Los reyes got Nanakuli into the 1982 Prep Bowl championship football game. He knows his stuff. Farrington top players gets picked clean by the ILH every year. What you expect them to win?

  28. Mahatma Gandhi December 14, 2016 5:05 pm

Who knows why Amosa Amosa was let go? I remember when he started on the OL at UH. His little braddah Lene also started for UH om the O line.

  29. mokihana December 14, 2016 5:48 pm

Mckinley in DII hasnt3 won a game in two seasons. I don”t hear any noise. The kids deserve better.

  30. nanakuli December 14, 2016 9:36 pm

Now we can all beat Campbell.

  31. Lenzo68 December 15, 2016 9:04 am

Coach Amosa and his staff did this for the love of the game and most of all the young men and women they work with. Although Coaching was Time consuming, shitty pay, issues with every parent uncle and aunty thinking their son is Div1 prospect when In reality they not he pressed on. He and his staff take crap from so call hometown fans who sit in the stands and yell all kind of crap during games in front of elders, kids, students. But he ignored them and pressed on for the kids. Kids leaving had nothing to do with coach mosa it was parents who thought transferring their kids would help them make it. Amosas mentality was if they come they come if they go other schools God bless them hope they succeed. Football is a passion and we believe if it’s a passion it won’t matter where you play. And by the way all the kids that did transfer maybe a handful played? 9 years at his alma mater was an honor for our family. All good things come to an end and It was time for Coach Amosa and Sam to go in different directions. Main thing my brother is at peace and now he is free to take his services where he is appreciated. Sabernation4life. But teamAmosa must move on. Thank you to all those who’s support coach Amosa, to his current players fight on Saber Style baby. Good luck to his awesome staff

    EQUATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
Parents be parents + Fans be supportive + Coaches coach + Players play = SUCCESS

    Current equation
Parents coach, talk shit + admin micro managing = going in different directions lol

Shoots thank you my USO press on

  32. phILHarmonic December 15, 2016 10:13 am

For those of you that “really” know him, Amosa is a good person, through and through, faith, family and community based, the whole package. I wish him good luck and God speed.

  33. kahukuwrckless December 15, 2016 7:53 pm

Kahuku doesn’t need him as coach. We’re doing fine. Good luck to him in the future. Smashing him at Campbell or smashing him at Kapolei is the same either way. RR4L!
