Punahou is the No. 1 team in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Boys Basketball Top 10 of the season, outpointing ILH rival ‘Iolani. The Buffanblu, who are unbeaten in preseason play, gathered 10 of 18 potential first-place votes in the balloting of coaches and media. The defending state champion Raiders of ‘Iolani collected five first-place votes. They lost to Kailua in the semifinals of the Surfrider Holiday Classic on Friday.
Kamehameha, which is unbeaten after capturing the Surfrider Holiday Classic title, received the remaining three No. 1 votes. Kalaheo, which is 2-2 after losing to St. Francis and Punahou, landed at No. 4. The Mustangs played without guard Captain Whitlock (groin) in the loss to St. Francis.
Kahuku, which opened preseason play with a loss at St. Francis on Saturday night, is at No. 5. The Red Raiders have two key transfers in Samuta Avea, who returned from Bingham (Utah) for his senior year, and Jessiya Villa, son of former All-State player Kahi Villa (Kamehameha).
Defending girls state champion Konawaena (6-0) is No. 1 in the girls Top 10 with 11 of 13 first-place votes. Maryknoll is No. 2 with the remaining two No. 1 votes. ‘Iolani, Kamehameha and Punahou round out the top five.
The Wildcats, led by sisters Celena Jane Molina (Washington State commit) and Cherilyn Molina, will battle nationally-ranked Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) on Thursday in the opening round of the ‘Iolani Classic. Archbishop Mitty is ranked No. 2 by USA Today.

It’s not about “Carryover respect” (what does that even mean?) It’s about one team lost and the other didn’t. Why you tryna stir up drama Paul?
No stirring necessary. I was prepared to vote for ‘Iolani at No. 1. That’s how I view defending champions. Even with the loss to Kailua, I thought they’d still a closer vote for the top spot. But I admit, I voted for Punahou, too. Kamehameha looked real good, too.
What is carryover respect?
For girls it will be a two team race, Maryknoll and Kona. My niece Kamalu is sensational for Maryknoll.
