The ILH released its all-star teams in football on Monday. Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and Punahou quarterback Nick Kapule were named co-offensive most valuable players while Punahou defensive lineman Miki Suguturaga was named defensive MVP in Division I. Punahou’s Kale Ane was named coach of the year.
In Division II, Damien swept the top player honors with quarterback Marcus Faufata-Pedrina winning offensive MVP and linebacker Shawn Borges taking home defensive MVP honors. St. Francis’ Kip Akana was coach of the year. The complete list of all stars is below.

Can someone tell me why Kale Ane was selected as D1 coach of the year vs. Cal Lee who not only guided his team to win the rigorous ILH but also upset a nationally ranked Kahuku team?
I agree, I could care less about Cal Lee, but I don’t understand how Kale Ane is chosen over him.
And seriously, Tua shouldn’t have to share MVP honors in the ILH.

We’re definitely in the ‘everyone gets a trophy’ era. With respect to Kapule, Tua is the POY and 1st team QB. Kapule is the 2nd team QB and the kid from Iolani who lead them to an 0-7 league record is maybe an honorable mention selection….

What stats or criteria is being used. When the coaches meet, they decide and definitely the bias showed through.

All Politics, I cannot believe some of the kids that made first team OMG, What games were you guys watching. Some kids cannot play worth of nothing but can pretend like they can! ” films dont lie” sure fool the coaches. Some kids play the whole season with no miss snaps, no penalties and play every down for all 7 games and get honorable mention. You go figure! Its not how well you play, its how loud you can talk and pretend that you are a good player! Shame!
Kapule is underrated. Had Tua not been present, he would have been a hot commodity. Let him celebrate this honor. No need for bashing.
I agree! Kapule is an excellent player and well deserve the Offensive player of the year. That means ILH has to give MVP to Tua then!
Kapule isn’t underrated…Tua was simply the best QB during this ILH season as defined not only by his skill set, but by his team winning the ILH Title. The 1st 11 means the best at those 11 positions only. Makes these All Star teams carry some meaning. Yeah, this is water cooler stuff…no big deal 😉
Who do you guys think deserved co-player for defense then? I’m curious. Figured Slade would be an automatic in but he was out for a lot
Wasn’t Noa Purcell a sophomore last yr? I could be wrong. Lakalaka went underrated IMO.
I’m cool with Suguturaga as the outright. But Toilolo also balled out this year….I’m hoping both he and Purcell are 1st Team All-Staters, though. They definitely deserve it.
I like Suguturaga as well. Toilolo would deserve that co-player imo if the option was open. I also hope he and Purcell are up there as all-state players. I think Lakalaka is also underrated but I’m guessing he wasn’t on the list because like Slade he was out a lot. He has college to look forward too. He can join the rest of the Lakalaka’s and make a name at the next level. Also, Purcell is a junior. Not sure why they put sophmore?

So true @thekrew808 I watched all the games of St. Louis (I’m alumni) I seen Taliulu injured ( hope he was ok) but made the team & missed Punahou, Waianae, & kahuku games? Is the ILH that thin where u can play half season & make all ILH?

Well. It IS the ILH all star team list. Also, there’s only 4 teams in D-I. They’re gonna need to fill out the roster spaces to list a complete all star team. Christ, there are other things to get mad about in life aside from rewards and recognition for high school kids who worked hard on the field. You girls whine about everything, just like 88.
Yes, Cal Lee should be Coach of the year, Why Kale Ane ? he lost the Title the last two years to Cal Lee. Also, Tua is the man, not Kapule, yes Papule did play well, but not well enough to bring back the title to Punahou.
Incorporate a long snapper in the all star selection…players can’t punt or kick field goals unless there is a long snapper. Just saying…

It is disappointing to kids and parents that the all star balloting is not statistically based.
Tua beat Punahou twice. Kapule lost twice to St louis, with 5 interceptions. POY is Tua.
If Kapule beat St louis the in the championship game Kapule would have been POY by himself, he had better numbers than Tua up to that game, but in the last game Cal Lee out coached Kale and that is why St louis are champions.
Nothing against kids from IOLANI getting props, but it should be at the expense of others.
I gotta agree with hwnstyll & TheKrew808. Players missing multiple games, Tagovailoa beating Kapule twice are both valid statements in descrpancies of the committee selecting these all stars. Tua should of made POY & Kapule should of made 1st team. How did the Iolani qb make 1st team when they didn’t win a D1 regular season game? Let’s face the fact of Cal Lee winning it all & deserving the COY. I see a Kamehameha player that’s granted two spots on the team which makes no sense because another player on the cusp loses out.
We can go on forever about this particular election process. In the past I’ve seen players get chosen based on their college commitments & national recognition rather than their progress in their league play. Its not only for football its been happening for all sports. I think Head Coaches need to all sit down & select these all stars single handedly.
