Two weeks from now, Timmy Chang‘s state passing record that has stood for 17 years could finally be broken.
Saint Louis quarterback Tua Tagovailoa needs 248 yards in the semifinals of the Open Division of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA State Football Championships to break Chang’s mark of 8,001 yards set in his three-year career from 1997 to ’99.
Chang has been supportive of Tagovailoa’s quest on social media.

Whatever happens over the next three weeks, one thing is for sure. There’s another Tagovailoa on the way set to completely obliterate the record books.
Kapolei sophomore Taulia Tagovailoa has clearly benefited from having former Hawaii head football coach June Jones as his offensive coordinator this season.
After throwing for 2,784 yards and 22 touchdowns as a freshman, Tagovailoa became just the seventh quarterback ever on Oahu to surpass 3,000 yards in a season as a sophomore.
Following his three touchdown passes in a 27-15 win over Waianae on Saturday for the No. 5-ranked Hurricanes, Tagovailoa has now thrown for 3,292 yards and 36 touchdowns with only six interceptions this season. With at least one more game to play on Saturday night against ILH runner-up Punahou, Tagovailoa currently sits sixth on the single-season passing list just 47 yards behind McKenzie Milton‘s 2015 season at Mililani.
The real shocker is the career passing list which Tagovailoa already finds himself on as a sophomore. He finished with 257 passing yards against Waianae to become the 14th member of the 6,000-yard passing club.
To put it another way, Tagovailoa’s sophomore season hasn’t even finished yet and he trails Chang’s record by less than 2,000 yards.
With two more full seasons and the horizon — and Jones calling all of the plays — the question isn’t whether Taulia Tagovailoa will break the state passing mark. It’s how far he will put it out of reach.
According to the NFHS record book, Maty Mauk of Kenton (Ohio) holds the national record with 18,932 passing yards from 2008 to ’11. That might be a little out of Tagovailoa’s reach, but it’s feasible Tagovailoa could put up two more 3,000-yard passing seasons, which would put him in the top 10 all-time in the country.
Here in Hawaii, nobody has come close to match Chang’s senior season when he threw for 3,985 yards and 64 touchdowns. If Kapolei can find a way to beat the Buffanblu, the yardage mark could be in reach.
Fans have at least one and maybe two more chances to see Tua Tagovailoa play before he enrolls at Alabama in January. Not all is lost though. Taulia Tagovailoa has two more years to continue the show he’s already begun. Who knows where it will end up, but one thing is for sure.

He would have sat out while watching and learning under older brother Tua. Not now. Why bring down a brilliant young man. What you only wish you had an offer from Alabama.
The 1 year sit out rule for OIA to ILH can be changed. It’s an ILH rule. Look what happened to the HHSAA football this year. Pressure can be applied at the right spots with power and $$$.

He should tranfer to a top high school in Alabama and get used to the mainland speed; He can pick Lane Kiffen’s brain & watch Tua play college ball at the same time. No disrespect to Kapolei but he is wasting his talent over there and will never win a state title as a Hurricane!! Good luck young man..

I think Taulia honor’s his talents very well! I agree with Hog Wild, these boys (Tua as well) are really some cool cats! Their father, Galu, has done an exceptional job training and tutoring them throughout the years and deserves so much credit for doing all of the ground work to put them both in a position to be successful in whatever it is that they put their minds to.
