GAME NIGHT 10/14: Punahou/Kamehameha

Seven games with major state tournament implications in most are on tap tonight on Oahu.

No. 10 Kamehameha (3-5, 2-4 ILH D-I) needs a win tonight against No. 2 Punahou (6-1, 5-1) or else its season is over. The Warriors are in danger of suffering their first losing season since 1992. The Buffanblu are eyeing their fifth ILH championship in six years.

HISTORY: Punahou leads the all-time series 90-89-6.

FOURTH QUARTER

Punahou brought in LB Logan Williams on the final drive to carry the ball once and he was hurt on the play and had to be helped off by teammates without putting any weight on his left leg. Could be a big blow.

Punahou’s 57 points are the most scored in the 186-game history of this rivalry, which is the longest rivalry in terms of games played in the nation.

Stephen Barber throws a 6-yard TD pass to Tamatoa Falatea with 1:17 remaining.

Justice Young in at QB for Kamehameha. Young with three incomplete passes and Kamehameha turns it over on downs.

Onsides kick is recovered by Kamehameha’s Chris Ah Mook Sang on the Punahou 44. Punahou forces a turnover on downs as Yam has three rushing TDs but is only 12-for-37 passing for 93 yards.

Jaykob Cabunoc has a 95-yard kickoff return to the Punahou 3 called back by a block in the back. Warriors drive to the Punahou 5 where it’s fourth-and-2. Yam with the option keeper again and he scores his third rushing TD of the game. Kamehameha goes for 2 and can’t get it.

Enoch Nawahine 25-yard TD run on third-and-10. 50-18. Kapule 21-33, 452 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT if his day is done. Punahou with 583 total yards.

After a long kick return to the Punahou 40, Kamehameha tries a trick play. Backward pass to backup Justice Young is dropped and Punahou recovers.

Kapule gets Ethan Takeyama a TD to give all four of his receivers at least one. 7-yard TD pass makes it 43-18. Punahou now has three receivers with at least 100 yards receiving.

THIRD QUARTER

Quarter ends on a 20-yard reception by Takeyama. Second career 400-yard passing game for Kapule, who is at 430 as the quarter ends.

Kamehameha will start on its 18. Third-and-2 and Miki Suguturaga comes off the end and stops Miyamoto right in his tracks for no gain. Huge play by Suguturaga to force the three-and-out.

Kapule gets off a 25-yard pass to Takeyama but a big third-and-6 here from the Punahou 46. Still plenty of time. Jonah Welch gets pressure off the end to force a quick throw and Kamehameha gets the stop. Punahou will punt.

Kamehameha facing fourth-and-2 at the Punahou 44. Warriors hand it off to Bollig, who is 6-0 and 316 pounds and he dives to the 41 for a 5-yard gain. Big boy got some moves. Another deep ball overthrown. Good throw is six right there. Cabunoc busts off a 17-yard sweep to the 24. Third-and-7 at the 21. Shannon gets 6 to the 15. Fourth-and-1. Punahou calls timeout. Warriors have used up almost six minutes on this drive. Yam fakes the handoff to Bollig and he’s gone. 15-yard TD run. Great call by the Warriors on fourth-and-1. Cabunoc runs in the 2-point conversion. 36-18, 4:33.

Punahou answers on its second play. Kapule to Cockett for a 76-yard TD. Cockett with four receptions for 155 yards and two TDs. Kapule 13-20, 360 yards, 4 TD.

Warriors first play is an option keep for Yam. 33-yard TD run. 11:30. 29-10. Couldn’t ask for a better start for the Warriors.

After a touchback, Kapule opens the second half with a 15-yard run. Kapule and Nawahine fumble the exchange and Andrew Aleki recovers for Kamehameha.

SECOND QUARTER

Yam shows some good touch on short throws to Pinao Awai and Onyx Freitas but still can’t hit the deep ball. Fourth-and-3 on the Punahou 47 with 1:00 remaining. Timeout Kamehameha. Cody Bollig rumbles for 4 yards and a first down. Kamehameha uses its final timeout with 26 seconds remaining on third-and-2. Pass is complete to Cabunoc for 9 yards. Now a pass to Rosa for 8 yards and Kamehameha has to hurry. It gets the play off pass is incomplete and no time on the clock but they put one second up. Adam Stack drills a 35-yard field goal.

Third-and-2 on its 14 and Punahou picks up the first down on a 10-yard pass to Cockett. Jump ball is brought in by Takeyama for a 35-yard gain. Punahou marches right down as Kapule finds Eamon Brady for a 25-yard TD. Kapule 12-19, 284 yards, 3 TD. Bad snap on the XP but Cockett picks it up and runs it in, helicoptering in as he gets hits jumping at the goal line. 29-0. 3:22.

Kamehameha moves the ball into Punahou territory for the first time as a roughing-the-passer penalty is called on Punahou. Sheldon Rosa breaks open down the middle but the pass is way overthrown. Next pass is a drop so even when Yam gets it on his receiver’s hands, Kamehameha can’t come up with it. Yam now 2-for-14 for 1 yard. Rosa with an 11-yard reception on the next play to set up fourth-and-4. Lakalaka forces Yam to scramble out of the pocket and he hits Cabunoc at the 19 for a big play but it’s holding on Kamehameha. Warriors have to punt now. Kamehameha down the punt on the Punahou 6.

Nawahine breaks off a 35-yard run on third-and-7. Great call by Punahou. Kapule is picked off for just the third time this year as DB Desmond Unutoa gets Kamehameha’s second takeaway.

Yam is bailed out on third-and-12 with a defensive pass interference call resulting in a first down. WELCOME BACK SEYDDRICK LAKALAKA. He comes flying off the end to sack Yam for a loss of 9. Kamehameha will punt as the Warriors have 19 total yards.

FIRST QUARTER

Kamehameha catches its first break as Martinson runs the same route as the TD and gets it in stride for a 39-yard gain before it’s poked away from behind. Tiger Peterson recovers for Kamehameha.

A drop on third down kills a big play and Kamehameha can’t get anything going. Yam now 1-for-10 as Warriors go three-and-out.

Nakoa Pauole sets up a third-and-12 with a tackle for loss but then Kamehameha jumps offsides for the second time. Cockett picks up 11 yards on the reception for a first down. Busted coverage and Kapule hits a wide-open Keala Martinson for a 62-yard TD pass. 21-0. 1:44. Kapule 6-10, 159 yards, 2 TD.

Yam completes his first pass to Brayden Miyamoto out of the backfield for 7 yards and a first down but Kamehameha can’t move the ball out of its own territory and has to punt.

Punahou makes it look easy as Kapule hits two consecutive short throws and then buys time and finds Judd Cockett, who makes a defender miss to finish off a 58-yard TD pass. 14-0, 5:26.

Kamehameha gets its first first down on an 11-yard stretch run by Jaykob Cabunoc. Warriors have to punt though as Yam starts 0-for-4. Adam Stack with a 53-yard punt to pin Punahou at its 15.

A 33-yard punt return to the Kamehameha 32 has Punahou in business. Nick Kapule at QB. Encroachment on Jonah Welch. Kapule overthrows a sure TD on his first throw. Third-and-9 on the 19 and Kapule runs for 18 yards to the 1. Enoch Nawahine 1-yard TD run. 7-0

Kamehameha will receive. Touchback. Lakalaka on defense for Punahou. Two runs for 4 yards and then DE Miki Suguturaga tips a pass from QB Thomas Yam at the line of scrimmage. Three-and-out.
