By virtue of its 36-10 victory at Kamehameha-Maui on Saturday, Lahainaluna clinched the Maui Interscholastic League Division II football championship and earned a berth in the D-II state tournament.
It’s the 10th straight MIL D-II championship and for the Lunas (5-3, 4-2). The last MIL D-II champion other than Lahainaluna was King Kekaulike in 2006. Na Alii went on to win the state D-II title that year with a 33-20 win over Kauai High.
The Lunas close out the MIL regular season with two games — against Baldwin at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday and at home against King Kekaulike on Oct. 21.
In MIL Division I, Baldwin (6-2, 6-0) leads the race over Maui High (4-4. 4-2) and can clinch a spot in the state D-I tournament for the 14th time in the event’s 18 seasons with one more win or one more loss by the Sabers.
Only Maui (2000 and 2014) and Lahainaluna (2001 and 2004) have represented the MIL in D-I at states aside from Baldwin since the inaugural tournament in 1999.
The Bears, who beat King Kekaulike 44-6 on the road last weekend, moved into the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 at No. 9 today.
Baldwin closes out its regular season with games against the Lunas (Saturday) and the Sabers (Oct. 22) at War Memorial Stadium.
The Sabers finish up with games at Kamehameha-Maui on Friday before its Oct. 22 finale against Baldwin.
