For the second consecutive week, Kahuku moved up on spot in the latest USA Today Super 25 rankings released on Monday.
The Red Raiders are now No. 22 in the nation after improving to 7-1 this season with a 56-6 win over host Kaiser on Friday night in Hawaii Kai.
Steven Lombard rushed for two touchdowns and Sekope Latu snapped a streak of 75 consecutive games played by the Red Raiders without a 100-yard receiver. Latu finished with four receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown against the Cougars.
The game was also a happy homecoming for Kahuku OL Vili Fisiiahi, who played at Kaiser two years ago. Fisiiahi got his first two rushing attempts of the season and scored Kahuku’s first TD on a 4-yard run.
Kahuku has a bye this week before hosting an OIA quarterfinal game next weekend at Carlton Weimer Field.
Bishop Gorman (Nev.), which handed Kahuku its only loss of the season, 35-7 on Sept. 17, remained at No. 1 in the nation after winning a triple-overtime game against No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fl.).
Aquinas is one of two ranked teams with two losses. Eighteen of the 25 teams are undefeated with Kahuku one of five teams with one loss. St. John’s College in Washington D.C. is 4-2 yet ranked one spot ahead of the Red Raiders.

Kahuku in the Too 25 at #22. Great. Those other polls are bogus as they figure in if your got a astro turf field. If your have a big bank roll and influencing boosters. If your coaches are paid well aND if your private schools. (Got more $$).
@iLH , It will take both PUN and STL to take out Kahuku…congrats, your money created the new 3 division tournament so that you can stack the cards in your favor. My suggestion if the ILH dont take the Open div title this year is to recruit more out of Kahuku to deplete them and change the title game to a best of 7 series. Having 12 out of the 14 D1 teams in the playoff has been a lousy idea. It has one too many rounds. More games is not always better.
The “open division” and how they populate the brackets for the 2016 D1 tournament is idiotic. Losers don’t go home, they go to another playoff. Just have more divisions so that they can have more playoffs, and hand trophies out to everyone.
Having three divisions might be a good idea. The bottom half for the OIA D1 does not compete with the upper half. The same can be said Of the ILH D1.
With everyone getting into a playoff one way or another, what’s the point of
A regular season? One champion from each league, playoff. Less games, simple, and decided on the field.
Any argument of “____” having to go through both ILH teams is moot. If they can’t win their league, what makes you think they will do better in states.
Count the number of payers on the rosters. Kailua has 31. Kahuku has 54.
Both enough to have a team, but no to little back up. More games favor larger teams, count pun/stl player amounts.

Like I said in another posting, one team per league works if you assume all leagues are more or less equal, or if your goal is to determine which league has the best team in the state. But the fact is, the leagues aren’t equal. ILH, top to bottom is the strongest (although the smallest), OIA is the largest league with the top of the league being extremely strong, and the outer island leagues can’t compete.
If the goal of a state tournament is to crown the best team in the state (versus which league has the best team), then you need multiple teams from the same league to enter. If Kahuku gets upset in the OIA finals and Kapolei (or whoever) gets in, Kahuku still deserves to be in states, just at a lower seeding. That’s how good they are. Same with Punahou and Saint Louis.
This is why NCAA tournaments have multiple bids from the same league.
So my solution would be for there to be a three tiered league structure with relegation and an OIA/ILH merger. Open state tournament will consist of each league champ and then two at large berths selected by reps from each league to round it out to an 8 team quarterfinal bracket. Selection will be based on strength of schedule, record, and significant wins. Have the teams play it out for the state crown.

FCS runs their tournament like basketball: conference champs + at large bids. Division I college football playoffs don’t necessarily have to take conference winners, especially if a school is an independent school (like Notre Dame). It tends to work out that way because FBS football came from the BCS bowl system which used to only take power 5 conferences. There’s a lot of politicking involved to keep the money and the big games with the big teams. But in FBS, there are technically at-large berths as well.
NFL playoffs takes conference winners and two wild cards per league (AFC and NFC). Wild Card teams didn’t win their division. Wild Card teams are also known to win the Super Bowl, for example 2007 giants, 2010 packers, etc.
If the NFL used Jason Kuema’s system or the prep bowl, those champions wouldn’t have existed, and the playoffs would also be an inferior product.

I think that we do away with the OIA and ILH format and just put the best teams in the Open division, the next set of teams in the next division and so on. Also level the playing field by having all the teams have the same amount of players.
There are those die hard’s that say recruiting this or recruiting that.. That argument is moot, Kahuku still dominates and can hang with a team of recruits AKA St. Louis or Punahou. However, given the chance, most all parents would send their child to a private school so no act.
The point is, just have teams that can compete on the same level play each other and that would hopefully do away with these blowouts every week.
Pro and collegiate football. Pro football: 20 games a season. Collegiate football 12ish games a season. Notice the younger the player, the fewer the games?
Comparing Basketball to football? no comparison. Basketball is physical, but not as physical demanding as football. Pro basket ball: 82 games, best of 7 game series. Pro football 20 games. In a playoff, one game and done.
al- I agree that not all leagues are the same. I believe we also agree that we want what is best for the kids.
The state tournament was created to involve ALL leagues, but it boils down to the OIA and ILH champions playing. Sure the outer islands never get past the first round, but who is to say that they will not in the future? Appalachian State beat Michigan, and in 2000 Kahuku beat St Louis.
I still like Waianae over St Louis or Punahoe. They held Kahuku to less points than St Louis did last year.
A 3 tier system sounds better, but 8 teams each division? Yeah 24 teams to the playoffs, everyone gets a trophy. In this aspect i like the college playoff of 4 and 1. Fewer games, fewer injuries. The only problem is that populating the brackets is left up to opinions, which can be wrong often.
How to populate the brackets, with out opinions is the problem, while reducing the number of games. I believe that is too insurmountable. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest solution. One champion per league playoff.

Jason Keuma: I dont’ get it. Can’t you have the same number of total games (or at most, an extra game added) as the existing format in a playoff scenario involving an 8 team quarterfinal? OIA teams have pretty consistently played around 13 or 14 games (if you make it far into the playoffs) since before the 70s. I don’t see people saying that the amount of games they play (8 in the regular season + 5 more games if you win playoffs and states) was too much or had negative affects on players’ health.
Three games for the OIA playoff, then 3 more for an 8 team open division? That would make an OIA champ have to play 14.
Under this one year fiasco. A team could purposely loose to become OIA 5, so they have a shot at D1 state champions. This is why I believe they did not think this “playoff” out. Let’s face it, if you are not the OIA 1 seed, you have no shot in the open division.
Take out the positioning (possibly loosing a game to get to the desired bracket), the opinions (polls), and the bureaucrats ( the pencil pushers that came up with this mess to justify their jobs) and simply have one champion per league, no second chances, (or third chances for the ILH 2 seed)
Some times the simpler solution is better. But to the person in charge, if it’s not their idea, it’s not a good idea.
I like the idea of more football, competitive match ups and more opportunities for the players to showcase their talent for post high school opportunities. I think the kids welcome the challenge, the adults not as much.
Open division, D1 division, i think we all know that whoever wins the open will be King. Why quibble about it? Some of those teams would have been putting their equipment away but now have a chance to play against teams, maybe, more evenly matched and by golly more entertaining to watch.
More football? Competitive match ups? Three 3-4 teams and one 1-6 team are playing this weekend. Are you watching any of those games? I highly doubt it. Some teams are putting their equipment away, because their season is over. Take the OIA down to 6 team playoff, that way it is more competitive games, teams with winning records playing teams with winning records. Sub 500 teams playing sub 500 teams is not very interesting.
Making something more complicated is not progress. Its not a state championship, its the prep bowl 2. The three division sounds interesting. How are schools classified? By student body size, like everyone else does, or by some other means? Just curious.
Cant argue with you on the games in the OIA this weekend but i was really referring to the potential match ups for the State Tournament in the three divisions.
With regards to classification, I believe its based on performance, take your division you have to move up(i think teams have been given a chance to remain down for one more year but if they take the division again they have to move up, or something like that), if you finish at the bottom of your division you have to go down.
I am a product of the PREP Bowl era and agree that the match ups were always solid, the best 1 and 2 of the OIA challenge the best 1 and 2 of the ILH. But the new format addresses the challenges of today much more effectively. There is a widening gap with the level of play within the OIA that results in lopsided wins week in and week out. This format will put those upper echelon teams together to battle it out with the best of other leagues, or league, ILH, for this year, and hopefully the outer island teams will opt in next year, if we have the same format.
Again, I have to say I enjoy watching competitive football games, and feel that the format for the state tourney will help to provide them. Will you be attending the state tournament?? Ill be there to cheer on these awesome kids.
