Missed opportunities hurt Waialua in a 26-7 loss to Waipahu on Friday. But even with the loss, the Bulldogs remain in the running for one of four OIA Division II playoff berths.
Waipahu (5-1, 4-1 OIA D-II) and Kaimuki (4-2, 4-1) remained a half-game behind leader Pearl City (4-1, 4-0) with their Friday wins. Waialua (3-2, 3-2) is in fourth place with two games left against winless McKinley and Pearl City. Kalani (2-2, 2-2) is in fifth place.
“Right now it opens the door for Kalani so we got to win the last two,” said Waialua coach Lincoln Barit.
In the first quarter, Waialua fumbled the ball at Waipahu’s 1-yard line. The Bulldogs later threw an interception and two minutes later, the Marauders scored the game’s first touchdown.
“I think it would’ve turned the tide if we scored on that,” Barit said.
Early in the second, a face-mask penalty called on Waialua allowed Waipahu to move the ball, leading to another touchdown. Kamakani Kahalewai intercepted a Waialua pass in the end zone in the fourth as penalties and turnovers continued to hurt the Bulldogs.
“When the opportunity comes, we got to capitalize and stop our mistakes,” Barit said. “I told the boys we had a lot of mistakes.”
