GAME NIGHT 9/23: Mililani/Kailua

No. 7 Mililani (4-1, 4-1 OIA Red) enjoyed a week off last week and now needs to beat Kailua (2-3, 2-3) tonight before rooting for Farrington against Kapolei tomorrow night. The Surfriders lock up a playoff berth with a win.

HISTORY: Kailua leads the all-time series 11-6 but the Trojans have won the last four meetings.

10:11 p.m.: 9-yd gain on first down, but then Gabriel is sacked for loss of 9 on 2nd dn. His third-down throw is incomplete short. 4th and 10 here for the Trojans. Gabriel’s heave far downfield into double coverage is batted incomplete. Kailua takes over at the Mililani 35, 39 seconds left. Kailua goes to victory formation and takes a knee. Not quite over yet … timeout called. Another knee does it. Surfriders defeat Trojans 34-28 in an absolute thriller.

10:08 p.m: Kailua’s squib kick goes out of bounds. Surfriders to rekick. Valladares can’t cleanly handle a line-drive kick, but he gets up to the 35. Mililani has 1:24 on the clock.

10:04 p.m.: Lagazo drops back twice and a row and is incomplete looking downfield. 3rd and 10, 1:37 to play. MARK LAGAZO TO CHRISTIAN MEJIA, 24-YARD TD, Home crowd goes nuts. But there’s a lot of time for Mililani to do something. 1:29 left pending the XP. 2pt … is good. Hanawahine-Wong puts it in on the ground and it’s 34-28 Kailua. Gabriel will try to answer.

10:00 p.m.: huge 4th and 6 here for Kailua in its own territory …converted! Ball at midfield, 2 min left. Lagazo hit Solomon Farley for the 13-yard pickup. Those two connect again to get it to the Mili 39, plus a personal foul late hit to the Trojans 24. 1:58 to play. That puts Lagazo at exactly 200 yards passing tonight.

9:56 p.m.: Mililani starts from its 40. Whoa. Turnovers biting the Trojans again. Muasau fumbles after a 22-yard gain and Kailua has it on its own 33, 3:28 to play. 5th TD of the game for Mililani

9:52 p.m.: Tanner Wright comes up HUGE for the Surfriders again, hauling in a 67-yard post strike from Lagazo. Kailua going for 2 here … Lagazo 2-pt pass to the end zone is no good, however, and Mililani clings to a 28-26 lead with 4:27 to play

9:49 p.m.: Hanawahine-Wong tears off a big gain for Kailua on a fake punt, but it’s somewhat nullified by a dead ball PF on the Surfers. Kailua still at its own 30

9:43 p.m.: Mililani goes three and out I believe for the first time tonight. Kailua set to receive this punt with 9:18 to play
it takes an awesome hop for Mililani, though, and Kailua has to start this drive from the 1. 59-yard punt there.

9:36 p.m.: 6-4 WR Tanner Wright hauls in a difficult ball under pressure and Kailua has made this a one-score game again on the 21-yd TD pass from Lagazo. XP is no good, though. 28-20 Mililani, 10:59 to play. That TD came on fourth and seven.

9:33 p.m.: 3Q ends with Kailua driving with some fresh running backs. Surfriders at the Trojans 19 going into the final period, Mililani leading 28-14

9:25 p.m: very, very costly PI on Kailua with Mililani facing 4th and 11. Trojans have new life at the Kailua 20. Turns out to be VERY costly indeed for the Surfers, as Gabriel fires a bullet to Valladares from 22 yards and the Trojans are back up two TDs, 28-14, with 3:13 left 3Q. Gabriel’s first TD toss of the game. That puts Valladares over 100 yds receiving.

9:14 p.m.: Bruddah Spencer-Choy Foo picks off Gabriel on a deep ball and Kailua takes over at midfield. But Ralph Laurence Castillo drops an pass in open space and Kailua has to punt it away. That could’ve been a tying TD.

9:06 p.m.: Second half underway. Kailua starts its drive from the 25. Surfriders go three and out. Field inverted and now Mililani starts from its 27 after a good punt.

8:58 p.m.: Kailua lineman Sione Veikoso is on crutches and appears to be done for the game. He went down in the 1H.
Darius Muasau has eight carries for 78 yards in that half for Mililani. A lost fumble, however. Kaine Park scored on two 1-yard TDs for his only rushes. Andrew Valladares with three grabs for 81 yards in the half. He has most of Gabriel’s 114 passing yards. Mark Lagazo is 8-for-15 for Kailua with 87 yards and a passing TD. Valladares also has the 89-yard kickoff TD return to open the game for Mililani.

8:45 p.m.: Darius Martin comes up with a pick of Gabriel on a deep heave. Third turnover in the half by the Trojans. Kailua may take a knee here from its 25 and 24 seconds left in the half. That’s indeed what happens. No. 7 Mililani 21, Kailua 14 at halftime.

8:39 p.m.: Kailua can’t convert a 4th and 4 on a keeper by Lagazo and Mililani takes over with under 2 min to go in the half. Trojans are operating from midfield.

8:32 p.m.: Mililani fumbles it AGAIN and Kailua takes over on the Trojans 48

8:28 p.m.: We got us a game at Alex Kane Stadium. Lagazo lofts it high for 6-foot-4 TE Christian Mejia for the 9-yard TD pass. XP is good and it’s 21-14 Mililani, 5:10 2Q

8:23 p.m.: Kailua recovers a Mililani fumble on the kickoff return. Mililani has a pick of Lagazo wiped off by a pair of penalties. Some real costly penalties on them tonight. Kailua had it at the 6 but a false start and a sack of Lagazo has Kailua back at the 16 now. A pass interference in the end zone brings it up to the 9 for Kailua.

8:14 p.m.: Kailua is on the board. The Surfriders use a 63-yard kickoff return by Chauncy Gonsalves-Bell to get into Trojan territory, then Lagazo converts a huge 4th and 8 pass to Kupahu-Phillips to keep the drive going. Kolo Hanawahine-Wong lines up in the wildcat and scores from 1 yard. XP is good, Kailua cuts Mililani’s lead to 21-7 with 8:05 2Q

8:08 p.m.: Dillon Gabriel finds Valladares for a 34-yard gain up to the 1 on 3rd and 25, and Park plunges it in from there again. XP good, Mililani 21, Kailua 0, 10:55 2Q

8:00 p.m.: Kailua is having all kinds of trouble stopping RB Darius Muasau. 1Q ends with Mililani marching up 14-0

7:58 p.m.: Lagazo goes incomplete on three straight passes from there and the Surfriders elect to punt. But it goes for a touchback and Kailua nets only 20 yards on it.

7:56 p.m.: Mark Lagazo scrambles through several Mililani would-be sackers and finds Hapaki Kupahu-Phillips 20 yards downfield to keep a drive going on 3rd and 20. Kupahu-Phillips had to tip it to himself to come down with it.

7:43 p.m.: The Trojans’ Jalen Olomua recovered a Kailua fumble near midfield and returned it for a TD, but had it called back to the Kailua 49. Mililani then marched down and Kaine Park plunged in from the 1. XP good, 14-0 Mililani, 5:45 1Q

7:29 p.m.: Wow. Mililani’s Andrew Valladares returns the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. XP is good and just like that it’s 7-0 Trojans, 11:45 1Q. Valladares found a big hole right up the middle and easily glided to his left to beat the kicker and go in untouched.
