Oh yes, it’s that time again, ladies and germs, to elaborate and congratulate these fine football teams.

Perhaps no compliment would be more apt than one to Tyler Taumua as we examine the Tyler Taumua Stat Ticker. It’s been a few weeks since we last examined the junior running back’s prolific numbers. With the Great Wall of Bamboolas clearing his way, Taumua had been on a record pace through six games. How has he fared lately?

He suffered an injury during a game with Moanalua and finished with 35 yards on 13 attempts.

Last week, he was healthy against Mililani and rushed for 164 yards on 23 attempts. With 1,451 yards through nine games, Tyler is now at 161.2 yards per game — well off his average through the season’s first six contests. This isn’t unexpected as competition gets tougher late in the season and defenses do more and more to curtail Farrington’s best offensive weapon.

If Farrington plays at least four more games — the Governors have to qualify for the state tournament by winning this weekend in the OIA semifinals — and Tyler stays on average, he will finish with 2,095 yards. That would be enough to set a new state record. That would put him 3 yards behind the current record holder, Kama Bailey (2,098 yards).

There is also the possibility that the Govs could play as many as five more games: two in the OIA playoffs and three in the state tourney if they don’t win the OIA and don’t earn a first-round bye at states.

The single-season record is believed to be held by Damien’s Bailey, who rushed for 2,098 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2007. Other high marks include Mosi Tatupu of Punahou (2,025 yards) and Joe Igber of ‘Iolani (2,017 yards).

(Update: Mark Atuaia of Kahuku rushed for 2,025 yards in 1990 and is the career leader with 3,404 yards.)
