OIA East champion Kaiser is a win away from rare territory for the school.
The Cougars are the East’s top seed in next week’s OIA softball championship, giving it a valuable first-round bye. The Cougars play either Kapolei or Roosevelt at home on May 6, and a win would put it in the Division I state tournament for the first time since 1997. Kaiser was in the division II tournament in 2013.
Should the Cougars get upset, they would play either Mililani, Castle or Waipahu in a loser-goes-home game.
If Mililani wants to repeat as the OIA Red softball champion next week, it is going to have to do so without the benefit of a top seed.
The Trojans split with OIA West champion Campbell in the regular season and added a loss to Pearl City, knocking them to the second seed in the West.
They have enjoyed the top position in the bracket in each of the last two years, falling to Kapolei in 2013 before running the table last year on their way to a state crown.
The Trojans still get the benefit of a bye along with Campbell, OIA East champ Kaiser and runner up Kailua. MIlilani faces the winner between Waipahu and Castle on Wednesday.
Campbell gets the winner between Moanalua and Leilehua and Kailua plays the Pearl City-McKinley survivor.
The four losers of those games play each other for the OIA’s two remaining state berths. The semifinals are on May 7 at McKinley and the championship is May 8.
