Punahou’s annual Clash of the Titans volleyball tournament begins its sixth edition on Friday night, and if the past is any indication it will be filled with plenty of close matches.
The Buffanblu will face Huntington Beach, the nation’s No. 1 program, on Friday and Mira Costa on Saturday. The Buffanblu are 7-3 in the event and has never lost both matches but has swept both twice. Hawaii Baptist is back to represent Hawaii for the first time since 2012, but the Eagles have never won a match at the Clash of the Titans.
The series has had a definite winner every year except 2010, when California and Hawaii split their matches 2-2. California teams have held a 3-1 edge every year since then except 2013, when Punahou and Kamehameha-Hawaii combined to go 3-1.
California holds a 12-8 edge over the history of the tournament.
Only two matches have gone five sets, with Punahou beating Mira Costa last year and Corona Del Mar going the distance to beat Hawaii Baptist in 2012.
But four sets went past 25 points last year and blowouts are extremely rare.
