>> Top-seeded Bailey Hoshino of Punahou, the ILH champ, defeated Menjam Tamang of Roosevelt 4-3. The score was 4-2 until the final seconds, when Tamang scored with an escape.
“I’m hoping there will be no overtime tomorrow because it makes me anxious,” Hoshino said.
>> Waianae’s Ilysia Sharai Sana scored a big upset with a 7-6 victory over top-seeded Iverly Navarro of Lahainaluna. Navarro led 6-5 and Sana tied it when Navarro pulled her singlet for a one-point violation. Sana then won it with an escape in the last few seconds.
“That’s why you have to keep on wrestling until the final whistle,” Seariders coach Mike Gonsalves told her at the end of the match.
Sana’s friends and teammates flocked to her side. Sana was beaming.
“Yeah!” she said, when asked if she’s going to go all-out tomorrow for the title. “I’m going to be ready. Coach Mike told me to keep wrestling, keep move. In the beginning, I felt like I was going to lose.”

THINGS HAPPEN FAST AT THE BLAISDELL, and the Lahainaluna girls — four of whom had byes in the first round — are starting to get into gear. The Lunas have never won a team state title and they have a shot.
Lahainaluna’s CARLY JARAMILLO just pinned Pearl City’s Jacqueline Fuamatu in the 138-pound quarterfinals (results of the bracket will come later). It came moments after Lunas teammate Breanna Dudoit-Vasquez won her quarterfinal match in the 132-pound class.
“I’m sad for the team because we didn’t get the points because of the byes,” Jaramillo said.
About the pin, she added, “She tried to throw her head and arm at me, so I rerolled her, got a reversal and pinnned her with my favorite move, an armbar.”
As for the team’s chances, she said: “I have a positive attitude that we’re going to win the whole thing.”
LOTS OF ACTION IN GIRLS 155:
Tyzandria Wells of Nanakuli, who beat No. 1-seed Taj-Destiny Vierra of Kamehameha in the first round, lost to Cendall Manley of Molokai in the quarters.
For Wells, she went from Cloud Nine to the dumps.
“I did feel like that (on top of the world),” she Wells said after the upset. “Now, I’m kind of distraught, but I can still wrestle for third place.”
As for Manley, she was full of happy sobs and got big hugs from her mom after her win to make it to the quarterfinals.
“I still can’t believe I did it,” she said. “I didn’t really believe in myself before states and now it goes to show that hard work really does pay off. This is really emotional for me.”
