One big-name Hawaii athlete, Punahou football guard Semisi Uluave, is still undecided on what college he will sign with and will likely keep it a surprise until Wednesday at the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance signing ceremony at the Sheraton Waikiki.
As of Jan. 2, Uluave had his choices whittled down to UCLA, Oregon and Texas Tech.
One trusted Honolulu Star-Advertiser source says Uluave has decided to go to Texas Tech, but that has not been confirmed or corroborated.
Another standout player, Kapolei offensive lineman Pesi Savea, is close to qualifying academically, according to Hurricanes coach Darren Hernandez, and if he does qualify, he will do a late signing with either Texas Tech or San Diego State.
Wednesday is the first day high school senior athletes in football, soccer and boys water polo can officially sign their letters of intent.
The list of students who intend to sign with their chosen Division I schools at the Sheraton on Wednesday is below. A host of other athletes will be signing at smaller colleges at the Sheraton on Wednesday as well.
All athletes have the option to change their minds and choose another school at the signing. It happens a lot.
Salanoa-Alo Wily is an example of someone changing his mind. Kahuku’s two-way football standout originally committed to Hawaii, but according to a recent Scout.com story, Wily has decided to go to UNLV. A Honolulu Star-Advertiser source confirmed the switch, but Kahuku coach Lee Leslie said Monday that Wily is split right down the middle and will be making a final decision with his family.
Leslie said the two schools are still working on getting the Red Raiders defensive lineman/running back to commit.
Saint Louis’ Matthew Mariota will be walking on at Oregon to play where his Heisman Trophy-winning brother led the Ducks to the national championship game.
