Texas Tech joins battle for Auwae, Savea

A busy December is going into warp speed for Kapolei offensive lineman Viliamu Auwae.

The 6-foot-6, 275-pound senior will be en route to Texas this weekend to play in the Blue-Gray All-American game. The game will be played on Sunday in AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

He heads right home after that. Finals week is right on the heels of his 7,552-mile round trip (more or less). Coach Darren Hernandez added that Texas Tech is the latest university to hop on the recruiting battle for Auwae.

In addition to Texas Tech, Auwae has scholarship offers from Washington State, BYU, Nevada, Utah State and Boise State. He’s not the only Hurricane drawing attention from recruiters. Fellow offensive lineman Pesi Savea (6-8, 310) has offers from Washington State, Boise State and, as of this week, Texas Tech.

Hernandez said that both student-athletes are “very close” to becoming NCAA Clearinghouse qualifiers.

    Where’s Hawaii’s offer?

It’s been Chow’s MO since his days at BYU to not make an offer until a player is qualified although if the coaches think you are close enough there might be an exception as in the case of Kennedy who got a late qualifying score. I think under the latest NCAA rules a player can’t even take an official recruiting trip until he is qualified.
