For just the second time in the last 25 years, Kahuku will make the long trek all the way East to Hawaii Kai to play at Kaiser Stadium against the host Cougars in an OIA Red game on Friday night.

Since 1973, Kahuku has won 10 of the 13 meetings between the two schools, including three consecutive shutouts of the Cougars, who haven’t scored against Kahuku since a 49-6 loss on Nov. 1, 1991.

Kaiser has the leading rusher on Oahu in junior running back Jensen McDaniel (72 carries, 571 yards, 12 TDs). The Cougars are just 2-2 in league play due to forfeiting their season-opener against Aiea due to an ineligible player. Kaiser’s only legit on-the-field loss was to Waianae when the Seariders dominated the time of possession and ran the ball 53 times against Kaiser, which committed four turnovers.

Kahuku is only allowing 34.3 yards per game on the ground and hasn’t given up more than 97 rushing yards in a game all season. Kaiser boasts three of the top rushers in the OIA Red in McDaniel, quarterback Kalawai’a Judd (37 carries, 208 yards) and junior Keith Jones II (25 carries, 181 yards, 1 TD).

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. since there is no junior varsity games. Live updates will follow below.

5:35 p.m. update: Kahuku is apparently stuck in traffic trying to get to Hawaii Kai. Not expected to arrive here until between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Obviously kickoff will be delayed.

The cheerleaders and band get here first. Now the football team is rolling in right at 6 p.m.

The team isn’t dressed. 30 minutes going up on the scoreboard. Estimated kickoff is now 6:35 p.m.

Let’s make it 7 p.m. as the white cap signaled to stop the warm-up clock. Kahuku still hasn’t taken the field at 6:20 p.m. They’re going to get a full 30 minutes to warm up we’re told.

Kaiser won the toss and will defer. Kickoff is 7:01 p.m. Officially a 61-minute delay.

Cougars stuff the first two run plays. Third-and-10 for Kahuku on opening drive. Kaiser cornerback Justin Ikei blitzes off the end but Red Raiders QB Tuli Wily-Matagi stiff-arms him away and then delivers a 16-yard pass to Salanoa Alo-Wily for a first down. Kahuku picks up another first down but gets a 15-yard penalty. Third-and-22 from its own 33 and Wily-Matagi overthrows an open receiver. Short pun by Kahuku and Cougars take over on their 45.

Judd with an option keeper for 18 yards and a first down. Pena Fitisemanu with a huge stop of McDaniel on fourth-and-2 and Kaiser is stuffed on its 29.

Ah-Hoy with a 15-yard run but a holding penalty moves Kahuku back. First-and-24. Wily-Matagi throws a deep ball and Chance Maghanoy outjumps the DB, who falls over. 70-yard touchdown pass and Kahuku is ahead 6-0 after the two-point conversion try is no good.

Kaiser goes big on its first play as Judd finds McDaniel for an 87-yard TD pass. Matt Sai‘s kick gives Kaiser a 7-6 lead with 5:49 left in Q1.

Alohi Gilman with a 65-yard return for Kahuku, which takes over at the Kaiser 30. Alo-Wily down to the 10 but fumbles and Parker Higgins recovers for Kaiser.

First down for Kaiser as Judd goes option keeper on third-and-1 for 2 yards. Judd goes deep to Isaiah Pongasi-Adric for 29 yards and a first down. Third-and-5 at midfield and Kaiser calls timeout.

Fake option pitch to Keith Jones II for 19 yards and a first and Kahuku is hit with a personal foul. Kaiser tries a reverse pass but Fitisemanu tackles Destin Moss to lose 8 yards. Third-and-long and Judd is hit late. Roughing the passer call on Kahuku. Kaiser will have second-and-goal at the 9 as the first quarter ends.

Judd is drilled on the first play of the second quarter. Pass falls incomplete and Judd is hurt. Trainers are attending to the Kaiser QB. He gets up and walks off under his own power. Higgins in at QB for a key third down. McDaniel runs for 3 yards. Kaiser will try a field goal. Sai’s kick is wide right and Kaiser comes up empty.

Third-down pass is tipped and Ikei with the interception for Kaiser, which takes over at the Kahuku 39.

Judd back in at QB. Kaiser does nothing with it as Judd runs twice then throws two incompletions. Kahuku takes over on its own 39.


AH-Hoy is stopped for a 2-yard loss by DB Jordan Kannys. Now DT Manase Palu with a tackle for loss. Wily-Matagi runs for 10 yards and it’s fourth-and-4. Kahuku fakes it and Ah-Hoy with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Keala Santiago. Two-point conversion is good but a holding penalty negates it. Kick is no good. Kahuku 12, Kaiser 7, 6:22, Q2.

Judd finds Moss for 66 yards to the Kahuku 14. McDaniel runs twice to the 7. Inside shovel pass is incomplete. Kaiser will try the field goal again. Sai’s kick is wide right and the Cougars come up empty again.

Afalava with a 5-yard loss on first down as Higgins makes yet another play for Kaiser. Third-and-long and Wily-Matagi with a perfect deep throw to Gilman for 38 yards. Deep ball again but Kaiser DB Isaiah Mahiko gets the interception although he is flagged for taunting after the play.

Judd goes deep to Moss who is open. 99 yards. Touchdown Kaiser. Extra-point is no good. Kaiser 13, Kahuku 12, 1:53, Q2.

Kahuku with two runs and then Cody Kim intercepts a Wily-Matagi pass. Three picks in the first half for the Kaiser defense. Kaiser has it first-and-10 on the Kahuku 26 with 34.6 seconds remaining in the half.

Roman Salanoa sacks Judd and the clock winds down. It’s halftime with Kaiser leading. Cougars will receive second-half kickoff.

Cougars open the second half with one first down as Judd completes to Andrew Kaufusi before punting. Kaiser tries a rugby style kick and Alo-Wily blocks the punt. Flag on the field. After a long delay a penalty is called on Kahuku. Punt and Kahuku takes over on its 30.

Third-and-6 for Kahuku and Wily-Matagi with the keeper. He slips past two defensive lineman and hits open field. He’s gone. 65-yard touchdown run. Point after is good. Kahuku 19, Kaiser 13, 8:14, Q3.

Cougars driving as Judd finds Kaufusi for 21 yards. Kaufusi fumbles but somehow Kaiser recovers. Kahuku is bringing the blitzes in the second half to mess with Kaiser’s timing and it’s working. Third-and-28 for Kaiser. 8-yard pass to Moss and Kaiser punts. The ball hits the receiver and is live but Kahuku gets it and avoids a huge turnover. First-and-20 on its own 20.

Kahuku starting to wear down the Cougars D-line. Three solid runs in a row. Final play of the quarter and Ah-Hoy fumbles on a big hit. Nuu Colton recovers it for Kaiser on its own 46 to end the third quarter.

Santiago with a huge breakup as Kaiser goes deep on third-and-2. Cougars punt with the wind, whatever wind there is, at their back. Kaiser downs it on the 1. Great play by Cody Kim.

Big third-and-1 for Kahuku at its own 29 with 8:24 remaining and the Red Raiders call timeout.

Ah-Hoy is stopped inches short on a big hit by Higgins. Fourth and next-to-nothing and Kahuku will go for it. Alo-Wily bounces outside for 12 yards and a first. Higgins drills Ah-Hoy and forces another fumble. Kaiser recovers on the Kahuku 49. Judd with a 10-yard run on third-and-6. Another third down and Judd runs option pitch to McDaniel for 6 yards. It’s fourth-and-1 on the 26 and McDaniel gets the first down. Judd and McDaniel confusion on the handoff and it’s a fumble. Kahuku recovers. Red Raiders ball with less than five minutes remaining.

Cougars call a timeout with 3:39 remaining as Kahuku has it third-and-10. Wily-Matagi to Gilman for 15 yards and a first down. Kahuku fumbles the handoff on third-and-2 and Kaiser has it back with 1:59 remaining.

Three McDaniel runs and Kaiser has it on the Kahuku 25 with 1:33 remaining. Kahuku calls timeout as the Cougars have it first down. Second-and-3 on the 5.

Kaiser third-and-goal at the 1 with 17.5 seconds remaining. It’s a madhouse.

    Terrible first half for Kahuku, the Long hypnotic bus ride and four turnovers. Hope they get things going in the second half.
