First day of the ‘Iolani Classic girls tournament is underway.
‘Iolani 61, McKinley 14, final
Eleven different Raiders scored in the win. Brooke Kaneshiro hit five treys and finished with a game-high 17 points. Kelsi Ikeda added eight points.
Jazmayne Williams, Tiare Sugui and Savanna Gonzales scored four points apiece for the Lady Tigers.
Long Beach Poly (Calif.) 62, Maryknoll 37, final
Airica Carmon and Ayana Clark with 14 points each to lead the Jackrabbits.
Maegan Martin led Maryknoll with 11 points.
Spartans played scrappy, but the Jackrabbits were too deep, too big and relentless with the defensive pressure. Maryknoll point guard Cianna Ochoco held her own despite facing on-ball fullcourt pressure from start to finish. The ‘Rabbits are athletic enough to press on everything, including Maryknoll’s rebounders.
Long Beach Poly (Calif.) 41, Maryknoll 28, end third quarter
Jackrabbits still using that sticky fullcourt press to stymie the Spartans. Tania Lamb, who hit two treys in the first quarter, left during the third with a leg injury after a hustling back on a Maryknoll fastbreak layup. Aside from her, Poly doesn’t have a legit 3-point threat, but with all that size and slashing, they probably don’t need one.
Long Beach Poly (Calif.) 28, Maryknoll 20, halftime
The Jackrabbits are playing with efficiency, hitting cutters and attacking Maryknoll’s man defense. But the Spartans rallied from an early deficit with tough defense and some driving buckets in traffic, including one by guard Cianna Ochoco.
The Spartans pulled within six on a 3-point rainbow by Kaile Cambra, but the Jackrabbits got another bucket from 6-4 freshman Ayana Clark in the post before the half.
Riverdale (Tenn.) 67, Kamehameha 45, final
Shelbie Davenport finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, four dimes and five steals in a dominant performance. Alexa Middleton tallied 20 points for the visitors.
Makana Aleki led Kamehameha with 14 points and Tiare Kanoa added 11.
Riverdale (Tenn.) 51, Kamehameha 32, end third quarter
Shelbie Davenport continues to play in Bird-like fashion. She scored seven more points in the third and now has six boards and four assists to go with her 19 points.
Riverdale (Tenn.) 33, Kamehameha 21, halftime
The ILH champions looked much more comfortable in the second quarter. Tiare Kanoa finished two steals with two layups as Kamehameha cut the lead down to 12 by the break.
Riverdale’s Shelbie Davenport continues to rule the roost. She finished the half with 12 points, three assists and two steals. She’s on her way to Clemson next year. Teammate Alexa Middleton, who has seven points, will play for Tennessee. She’ll be joined by Westview’s Jaime Nared, who played — and dominated — in the earlier game.
All in all, the Kapalama Warriors are adjusting to a faster, taller team. This game is clearly not out of reach, but they’ll have to contain Davenport some way, somehow.
Riverdale (Tenn.) 22, Kamehameha 9, end first quarter
The Warriors from Tennessee are putting on a show against Hawaii’s defending state champions. Shelbie Davenport, a 6-foot forward, is playing like a female Larry Bird, hitting threes, dishing sweet passes and scoring points. She had seven points in the opening quarter.
Riverdale went 35-0 last season and was No. 1 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25.
Westview (Ore.) 62, Hilo 46, final
Jaime Nared poured in 29 points and rejected four shots as the Wildcats eased past a scrappy Hilo squad. No other Wildcat scored in double figures.
Aliyah Pana paced Hilo with 22 points, including 11-for-12 shooting at the free-throw line. Shalyn Guthier added 10 points for the Lady Vikings.
Westview (Ore.) 46, Hilo 30, end third quarter.
Jaime Nared added another block and has three in the game. At 6-2, she’s more than a foot taller than most of the Vikings. That wouldn’t be an issue if Hilo could free up on the perimeter to get more open looks, but Westview has done a good job of containing the shooters.
Hilo standout Aliyah Pana has continued to work the low post with some success, but Nared is suffocating everybody else. The Viks are a small team, even by Hawaii standards. One plus they’ll take from this game is that they forced a potential Oregon state champion (favorite?) into a boatload of turnovers.
Westview (Ore.) 28, Hilo 18, halftime
Jaime Nared has 15 points, two blocks and a bunch of rebounds (I’m not statting this game) to lead the Wildcats. The 6-foot-2 senior is on her way to Tennessee next season. The Volunteers are going to love her. Great handles, totally composed against a physical Hilo press, boards, swats, runs the floor.
Aliyah Pana has nine points for Hilo, all the hard way. The Wildcats are smothering her with traps and none of the other Vikings has hit a 3 yet. They need to hit some perimeter shots against the taller Wildcats. Westview has struggled some against Hilo’s defensive pressure, but they’ve also gotten some easy layups.
Westview (Ore.) 15, Hilo 10, end first quarter
The visitors are riding the versatility of 6-foot-2 senior who can play any position. Strong on-ball defense by Hilo, with some double-teams at midcourt, has helped. So has Aliyah Pana, who sank two treys.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 3 in Oregon by MaxPreps. Hilo finished third in Hawaii at last season’s state tourney.
