Unbeaten ‘Iolani riding No. 1, Campbell enters Top 10

Abby Tanaka, haylie-Anne Ohta and Jovi Lefotu chatted after ‘Iolani's 54-47 win over Punahou on Saturday. Paul Honda/phonda@staradvertiser.com.

‘Iolani collected nine of 12 first-place votes to remain atop the Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 on Monday.

The Raiders won their ILH regular-season opener against Punahou, 54-47.
‘Iolani travels for a battle with No. 4 Kamehameha on Tuesday.

Konawaena collected the remaining three first-place ballots and remained at No. 2. The Wildcats got a key road win at previously unbeaten Waiakea over the weekend, 47-32.

Punahou’s strong start in ILH play — wins over Maryknoll and Kamehameha — inspired the panel of coaches and media to lift the Buffanblu three spots to No. 3, even after a loss to No. 1 ‘Iolani.

Maryknoll traded places with Punahou slipping to No. 6.

Maui, under first-year coach Vic Aguirre, remained unbeaten in MIL play at 5-0 (8-1 overall) and remained No. 4. Kamehameha (5-3, 1-1) rounds out the top five.

Campbell entered the Top 10 for the first time this season. The Sabers knocked then-No. 10 Radford from the lead in the OIA West and are now 6-0 in league play.

Kamehameha team starting to play some good ball . There was some criticism aimed at the coach earlier . They don’t have an elite player but they’re young and play hard and compete . That’s all you can ask for as a coach . Good job coach and girls .just my thoughts

    MINE

    1. Iolani : even though they didn’t look that good vs punahou. they are the 2 time defending champs.
    2. Kona: they got the best coach and a really good player in salazar.
    3. Punahou: played iolani tough. beat maryknoll and kamehameha.
    4. Kamehameha: beat maryknoll and beat maui 2 times.
    5. Hilo: 4 really good starters.
    6. Waiakea: undefeated.
    7. Campbell: pretty good looking team.
    8. Maui – beat maryknoll by a few. lost to a really young kamehameha team one time by a little and the next time by a lot.
    9. Maryknoll: a really good player with some bad losses.
    10. Roosevelt: untested so far.

I am not overly impressed with the team last year. Iolani was really good two years ago but they graduated a lot. Watched Iolani struggle versus Punahou until they pulled away late. It’s really tough to tell who is good on the Big Island. The better teams play the weaker teams and scores are uually like 77-6 or 81-9. They should mirror ILH and have the top teams play each other multiple times and put the weaker teams into D2 to play themselves only. It might be boring, but it will be more competitive for everyone. Maui is okay. But like what is written above, Maui came to Oahu to play at the Damien tourney. It got canceled due to some covid stuff going on. Maui ended up losing to Kamehameha twice and beating Maryknoll one time. There is a lot of parity. But with parity has also come with some sloppy basketball. But it’s better than canceling the season like last year.

@ world B , great point about the big island should do what the ilh does. It would make everyone better instead of the 77-6 scores .

Thank you @world b totally true. So sad Maryknoll has so much talent

This is insane. From 2:17 in the 4th until 1:48 in the 4th (approximately 29 seconds of game time) Kamehameha is playing with 6 players on the court.

The Kamehameha Coaches, the officials, and pretty much everyone else does not notice that Kamehameha has 6 players. What is worse is Kamehameha scores with an extra players.

No one notices until the lefty guard on Punahou is yelling out they have 6 players to the officials.

Then they finally call a technical. Imagine if Punahou lost by 1 point? Talk about not doing your job, SMH.
