Jason Mariteragi rebounds from injury, sparks Kahuku to 1st state title since 2015

Kahuku quarterback Jason Mariteragi used his arm, and his legs, to help the Red Raiders blow out Saint Louis to win the Open Division state title on Thursday. Photo by Steven Erler/Special to the Star-Advertiser.

Long ago, in another space and time, a young football player named Jason Mariteragi landed a varsity football team.

Young Mariteragi wafs a freshman quarterback.

“We brought him up to varsity,” Kahuku coach Sterling Carvalho said. “He was 120 pounds.”

On Thursday night, all the promise of the humble field general came to fruition. Mariteragi, who suffered a midseason injury and returned only two weeks ago, was nearly flawless in Kahuku’s stunningly lopsided 49-14 victory over Saint Louis for the Open Division state championship.

“I just gained more experience. I got an amazing O-line, many weapons,” said Mariteragi, who was 10-for-13 with 186 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Most importantly: zero turnovers.

The twitchy dual threat also ran for 30 yards on six carries, including a 21-yard jaunt to set up a TD. Mariteragi was at another level after years of dreaming and hoping for his chance.

“Nearly perfect. That’s senior leadership. That’s four years of varsity football. It showed tonight,” Carvalho said. “He was poised. Nothing really rattled him.”

Versatile defensive and offensive playmaker Liona Lefau knew Mariteragi was ready.

“That’s the best you could see a quarterback play right there. We honestly believe we have the quarterback the state. We believed that from the start to the finish even when he was down (with injury), we knew we had him. We trusted in him. He was our guy from the start to the end,” Lefau said. “He played a wonderful game today.”

Injury, pandemic and the departure of several teammates over the past two years could have derailed Kahuku. Instead, seniors like Jason Mariteragi remained steadfast, which makes the Open Division state title that much sweeter. Paul Honda/phonda@staradvertiser.com.

Kahuku spent every morning this week in film sessions, studying Saint Louis’ tendencies on both sides of the ball. Mariteragi didn’t have a designed run, but his escapability forced the Crusaders to account for him, which opened up the offense for Kainoa Carvalho, who finished with six receptions and 135 yards with two TDs, both in the third quarter.

“Obviously, we’re going to make some mistakes and miss reads here and there, but the execution, knowing where the ball should be, being smart with the ball, knowing when to scramble,” coach Carvalho said. “When (Mariteragi) went to an empty set, the middle’s going to be wide open to find a crease and he was running for a lot of yards in the beginning. They knew the game plan and they executed it.”

Congrats to both teams. Considering we live in a different Covid world with Omicron everywhere, I’m just glad they got to play. Thanks to all the organizations involved with ensuring a safe environment for the teams to play in.

And congrats to Big Red boys and coaches. Das what happens when the talent stays home. Hopefully future generations take note.

    RRFL! Hail Kahuku Hail.

  10. ??? December 24, 2021 7:06 am

    STL:
We didn’t win cause of Covid.
Cause we didn’t play in over a month.
Cause we didn’t recruit well enough.
Cause Cal Lee not Head Coach. etc.. etc..
You didn’t win cause Kahuku SASA Dat Muli Fair & Square with Home Grown Studs PERIOD..
    Congratulations Kahuku Red Raiders!!!!
    Will Akana come home now?

  11. mjthegoat99 December 24, 2021 9:16 am

Both teams had stud players leave for the mainland because of uncertainty that a season was even possible. That was the only chance Kahuku and the rest of the schools had to dethrone STL. STL will regroup and take it all next year, consider this year a gift to all.

Guarantee the HBO documentary will be a success. Small rural town David football team beating goliaths. In an age of Maxprep, recruited HS catholic prep teams an old school, rural, one horse town doing it the old fashion way. Community, homegrown hard working boys. No malls, no Gamestop, no fancy city, just a dusty field and a football.

  13. CrusaderDad December 24, 2021 9:23 am

Congrats to Kahuku, they won all phases – Off/Def/Special Teams. Overall my son had a great football career at the Lou: pulled up to practice with the 2018 State Champs, played on the 2019 State Champs team and finished as runner up his Sr season. Now off to play college football. Be Safeamd Happy Holidays!

  14. SHUX December 24, 2021 9:40 am

Akana can stay where he is, we won 25+ OIA championships and our fair share of state championships without him, lots of underclassmen waiting for their turn….TOO MEKE hit it on the head….this is what happens when talent Stays home, its not like the kid was struggling for exposure, before this season he was already super talented and highly recruited….. he doesn’t need the Red Raiders and the Red Raiders don’t need him…..stay where you are and do your thing

  15. ILH December 24, 2021 10:22 am

Congratulations to Kahuku, no doubt about that this year, can’t win every year, sooner or later you will lose, but still a good but very long season for the Crusaders, hopefully next year will be a normal year where we go back to the OIA vs.ILH format during the season. Congratulations again to the good people of Kahuku not to the fans that always acts stupid with there comments.

  16. 88 December 24, 2021 10:30 am

MyTheGoat99- they transferred out cause they knew the @$$ whooping that was coming…. They would of got whooped last year if there was season and they going to get whooped next year too. Consider Coach Carvalho taking his foot of the gas a gift cause BigRed was about to drop 80 on you guys…..

  17. Big boyz December 24, 2021 11:55 am

North shore let act like we won championship before because we have we came out the victor tonight but there always next year player coaches and fans remember actions and behaviour we take pride in our kids coaches and community humility in victory motivate in defate

  18. Recruited not Rooted December 24, 2021 12:27 pm

Proud of all these kids on both sides dealing with so much. STL just couldn’t overcome such a dissaterous start, including their QB getting concussed on the second play of the game by a cheap shot. In the end though, Kahuku couldn’t hung 60 on us so I don’t think it really mattered. Congrats to RED RAIDERS, well deserved.

  19. HI HS FAN December 24, 2021 12:53 pm

    @Recruited not Rooted,
So the QB got a concussion by a cheap shot, hmm? Then, why did they keep him in the game? Plus you saying Kahuku couldn’t score 60 meaning what? It wasn’t the Crusader’s night. No excuses. Kahuku came to make a statement. AND YES THEY DID!

CONGRATULATIONS KAHUKU 2021 HHSAA OPEN DIVISION CHAMPIONS! YESSAH!

  20. 88 December 24, 2021 1:05 pm

@HI HS FAN- MERCY RULE is all you gotta say….😂😂

  21. Pakelika December 24, 2021 2:51 pm

If the Kahuku Intermediate and High School continues to engage in the Denationalization and Americanization of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects, that will be noted by the Royal Commission of Inquiry and reported to all of the contracting parties to the Geneva and Hague Conventions, the International Red Cross, and the International Criminal Court. The US District Court in Honolulu is preparing to transform itself into an Article II court, and grant the Hawaiian Kingdom the declaratory and injunctive relief from American laws and American government officials that it is asking the Court for. If the Court rules in the case of Hawaiian Kingdom v Biden et al according to applicable laws, rather than any other-such as political-considerations, it will grant the declaratory and injunctive relief from American laws and American government officials, and the Kahuku Intermediate and High School will be compelled to remove the words in the school’s alma mater hymn that promotes the Denationilization and Americanization of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects, and cease from any and all other forms of Denationilization and Americanization that it is doing. We are who we were, not what the Americans have brainwashed into believing, and told us, we are.

  22. Recruited not Rooted December 24, 2021 3:23 pm

@HI HS FAN Yes he was taken to the hospital after the game with a concussion. It was pretty clear from the replay he was knocked out and had to be helped up onto wobbly legs. Our refs, coaches and trainers need to do a better job protecting these young men no matter the situation or kid/position. Their health is paramount over any outcome in any game. As for saying Kahuku couldn’t score 60, that should have read could’ve scored 60 but auto correct changed it and I didn’t realize. As I said before, my hats off to Kahuku, the better team won handily. Congratulations!

  23. Saberuo4lyphe December 24, 2021 6:44 pm

@shmallkine easy I watch the game and the plays and it was the same plays they used on cambell only different is they used kaikai in the backfield for screens and what not trust they were very frustrated against cambell defense If cambell offense was good it would be a different story… fact….we will get them next year congrats to all kAhuku on the win …

  24. Pakelika December 24, 2021 6:46 pm

Post #17 is an example of so many that can be found on this forum, of commentary on Hawaii Prep World articles about the Kahuku Intermediate and High School Football Team. According to publicly available information, only 57% of the students at Kahuku High perform at a level that could be considered to be proficient for their grade level. If this particular writer is or was a student at Kahuku High, it is very likely that he/she is or was not among the 57% who could perform proficiently at reading. And if a graduate of Kahuku, that’s even worse! If more of the community of Kahuku cared much more about academic performance and success even nearly as much as they seem to care about Kahuku football, that proficiency percentage would be much higher!

  25. Hilo Heights December 24, 2021 9:13 pm

    @Pakelika
If you to go back to the old Hawaiian days and the old Hawaiian ways, then walk to work without using a car and see how long that last.. Catch your food and grow your food without going to the store.. America have become modernize to make life better for all of us.. Even giving you a voice to say what you want.. That’s called freedom… As for Kahuku being uneducated, how about you take your butt down to Kahuku and educated them.. If not, find somewhere else who actually gives a rats.. Now we can talk about football.. Congratulations to Kahuku Red Raiders for an awesome win last night.. I don’t think anyone gave St Louis a mercy rule before.. Congratulations to St. Louis too..

We appreciate all that you do!

  27. 96730to89 December 25, 2021 12:41 am

Great season Big Red. Many STL supporters were doubting you from the jump attributing your ealry dominance to “lack of competition,” in the OIA. I personally knew your strength when a questionable hit was made on Mariteragi versus Mililani the first game and Big Red responded by turning the score board into an early Christmas Parade Light Show. You could have made the “dirty hit on our QB is why we lost,” excuse. But your young men are just built differently.
Undisputed State Champions that deserve National Recognition.

  28. Pakelika December 25, 2021 2:23 am

Like the writer of post #17, the writer of post #24 is yet another example of the level of proficiency-relatively low- in reading, writing, and language skills exhibited by all too many of the Kahuku community who comment on this forum. Apparently they don’t realize that in their attempt to express their opinion of Kahuku football, they expose the failure of the Kahuku Intermediate and High School to properly educate them! If a current or former teacher or principal of the Kahuku Intermediate and High School were to read some of the comments on this forum, surely they cannot be pleased with what they can see! Especially if they are reading comments written by graduates of the school. But the writer of post #24 unwittingly reveals something more-confirmation of what was pointed out in post #21: (if the writer is a Hawaiian Kingdom subject) Denationilization and Americanization, which are accomplished by inculcation, also known as brainwashing. The fact that this writer believes that if someone asserts their national identity as a Hawaiian Kingdom subject in the present, they must give up all modern conveniences and return to a way of life of earlier times, and that freedom of expression is due to the American occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom, evidences the effectiveness of American inculcation-brainwashing- and that the war crimes of Denationilization and Americanization of Hawaiian Kingdom subjects have occurred. Clearly this writer has a distorted understanding of what it is like to live in the Hawaiian Kingdom, where ‘Iolani Palace was equipped with electricity and telephones before America’s Executive Mansion-what the White House was called-was equipped with those modern conveniences, and freedom of expression was abundantly and enthusiastically displayed, evidenced by the proliferation of Hawaiian language journals that existed before 1948 and can be read today, because of the effort of dedicated people to make them available online and translate them. If the writer of post #24 would take the time to become informed and educated about the Hawaiian Kingdom, he/she would find that Hawaiian Kingdom subjects possessed every liberty that Americans did; we didn’t need our government overthrown by the Americans, and our country occupied by them, in order for us to be free and modern! Rather than make a convincing argument in favor of the American occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the writer of post #24 unknowingly confirms that the war crimes of brainwashing, Denationilization, and Americanization have happened within the occupied territory of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and that the Kahuku Intermediate and High School have been instrumental in their commision, if the writer is a former student of the school.

Sooooooo….is St. Louis just another “horrific” team now?

  30. Big boyz December 25, 2021 10:35 am

    Pakelika
Apparently do didn’t take my advice you talk a big story but you weren’t brave enough to educate the brainwash kahuku fan base ( what u scared )That’s alright bro your a lot safer behind your key broad cutting down people you know nothing about because if you really care about the demyelination of the Hawaiian kingdom you wouldn’t be wasting your time on a football blog actions mean more than words don’t come on hear and tell us how corrupt we are do same thing about it instead of making noise

  31. Pakelika December 25, 2021 2:53 pm

It is both humorous and pitiful that big boys persists in offering even more evidence to strongly suspect he/she of being among the 43% of students at the Kahuku Intermediate and High School who are unable or perhaps unwilling to perform at a proficient level in reading-and very likely in reading comprehension, writing and language skills too. Would big boys be happy to have any of his/her teachers from the Kahuku Intermediate and High School read his/her comments posted on this forum, particularly those aimed to attack Pakelika? Predictably and as usual, this individual has nothing of serious substance to rebut with, let alone refute, to anything stated here about the Hawaiian Kingdom or the problematic state of education at the Kahuku Intermediate and High School. While it may be thought clever to invent the term demyelination, as an original product of this individual’s imagination it is meaningless to anyone else. The so called “advice” to take comments somewhere else only invites persistent defiance, and the suggestion to stand on the highway on game night with a iluna huli ilalo Hae Hawaii is not a very well thought out and constructive one. Dr. David Keanu Sai, Chairman of the Council of Regency of the Acting Hawaiian Kingdom government, would not think very much of that suggestion. Trying to educate people on their way to a game about the occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom is most likely ineffective, Keanu would probably say. And the taunting words “what you scared?” imply that the Kahuku community includes criminal and violent people who would be easily offended and provoked to assault physically someone with an unpopular message. If big boys thinks it is a waste of time to comment on this forum about the occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom, why would that be of any concern to her/him, particularly since she/he disagrees with the message. No big boys, you have offered no good advice or suggestion worth even considering.

  32. Bleed Red December 25, 2021 3:12 pm

I would like to humbly apologize for 88’s actions. Our community is built on values, humility, class, and grit.

On behalf of our community I am sorry for 88’s behavior.

We would like to congratulate both teams. With Covid and the struggles that so many families have gone through, it is as refreshing to see so many student athletes get to participate in a championship game.

I hope the blogging audience will not hold our community responsible for the poor and childish actions of one.

  33. AUWE December 25, 2021 4:28 pm

@Pakelika, the not so smart kids down at Kahuku have finished their time machine, they will gladly send you back to the 1800s, hope your fishing and taro planting skills are up to par if not you gonna starve.. have a safe trip brah.

  34. Pakelika December 27, 2021 7:41 pm

Auwe unwittingly has revealed his/ herself as prima facie evidence of the effectiveness of American brainwashing in the occupied territory of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Rather than feel insulted, as Auwe undoubtedly intended, Pakelika sees an opportunity here and would love to invite Auwe to make an appearance before the Royal Commission of Inquiry that has been formed by the Council of Regency of the Acting Hawaiian Kingdom government for the purpose of gathering facts about the commission of war crimes in the occupied territory of the Hawaiian Kingdom since the beginning of the American occupation, and submit those facts in a report to all the contracting states of the Geneva and Hague Conventions, and international organizations such as the International Red Cross and the International Criminal Court for consideration of possible further action. If Auwe is a Hawaiian Kingdom subject, and sincerely believes otherwise, especially if that belief is that Auwe is an American, that would weigh in as evidence against the USA-evidence that could be called prima facie, meaning evidence so clearly apparent that it is primary and on the face of Auwe by reason of Auwe’s testimony and is sufficient to prove that the war crimes of brainwashing for the purpose of Denationilization and Americanization have occurred. It would require the USA to present substantial contradictory evidence to effectively refute the war crimes charges of Denationilization and Americanization accomplished through inculcation-which is brainwashing. It is impossible for the USA to present such evidence because it never lawfully acquired the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the Hawaiian Kingdom over it’s territory by the means of a treaty of cession, there is no treaty of cession between the Hawaiian Kingdom and the United States. There is no other evidence that the United States could present to disprove the war crimes charges.

Auwe seems to believe that identifying oneself as a Hawaiian Kingdom subject in the present means that one must revert to a lifestyle of an earlier time and give up all and any modern conveniences. Auwe believes that anyone who identifies as a Hawaiian Kingdom subject is confined to the 19th century, why? By what sophistry of reasoning did you come up with that odd conclusion Auwe? On the other hand, any Hawaiian Kingdom subject like Pakelika could very concisely and logically explain to Auwe why the Hawaiian Kingdom continues to exist, why it is under a prolonged unlawful military occupation by the United States, and what is currently being done to correct this outrageous injustice and violation of the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom and international law. Auwe writes nonsensically and instead of appearing to be clever and insulting, Auwe is displaying ignorance about the lawful political status of the Hawaiian Islands, the effects of American brainwashing, and is the living embodiment of an observation made by the British television writer, novelist, and nonfiction writer Dresden James: “A truth’s initial commotion is directly proportional to how deeply the lie was believed. When a well packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous, and it’s speaker a raving lunatic.”

Respect to the Crusaders. They are a class act. Happy my Red Raiders we’re able to bring the trophy home to the North Shore though.

  36. Big boyz December 28, 2021 1:09 pm

Pakelika blah blah blah all I read is noise with no substance because all you can do is type words and attack people and an community you know nothing about you put yourself on a pedestal? To make you feel what superior so you can criticise and demean a community ,bro that is beneath one dignity even for a self righteous Bogotá’s as yourself Life is to short to get caught up in your own intolerance towards those who hold different opinions from oneself

  37. Pakelika December 28, 2021 7:34 pm

Please be advised that Bogota (there is no s unless indicating the possessive form of the noun) is the capitol city of Colombia, and is definitively not Pakelika! Maopopo no ‘oe? To my dear boy Mr. Big Boys and companions who have their own and different opinion on the prolonged unlawful military occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the USA: “The ideal tyranny is that which is ignorantly self-administered by its victims. The most perfect slaves are, therefore, those which blissfully and unawaredly enslave themselves.” Your ignorance of the truth by reason of brainwashing began in 1906 as a formal program of patriotic instruction carried out in the schools in the occupied territory of the Hawaiian Kingdom for decades. More mahope

  41. Pakelika December 30, 2021 6:21 pm

Yet another poster on this forum, using the pseudonym ???, has voluntarily offered evidence that he/she is or was among the 43% of students at the Kahuku Intermediate and High School who have demonstrated their inability to perform at the level of proficiency in reading, and likely reading comprehension and writing and language skills too. At no time and nowhere on this forum has Pakelika ever explained Pakelika’s life. This individual using the pseudonym ??? either suffers from dislexia or has a great deal of difficulty with reading comprehension. ??? is not in a position to judge or determine whether Pakelika has too much discretionary time, and if ??? thinks so, of what concern is it to ??? and why should anyone care? ??? also is not in any position to restrict comments on this forum to any particular topic. The real bottom line here, as opposed to the relatively trivial one so important in the mind of ???, is not football games but rather the more than a century and a quarter old prolonged and unlawful military occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the USA, causing Lahui Hawaii and its environment and resources to stagger under that oppressive weight.
