Another day, another cancellation.
West Linn (Ore.) had rocked out during the first two rounds of the ‘Iolani Prep Classic with a 102-36 win over Damien on Saturday and a 100-39 victory over Baldwin on Monday.
As of Tuesday morning, the Northwest powerhouse was scheduled to play St. Paul VI (Va.) in the semifinal round at 4:30 p.m. Instead, West Linn dropped out, which means a shift for Central Catholic, another Oregon school. Central Catholic lost to Pembroke Pines (Fla.), 75-50, on Monday and was slated to play host ‘Iolani at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Instead, Central Catholic will replace West Linn in the 4:30 p.m. slot. The first semifinal pits No. 1 Sierra Canyon and Pembroke Pines (Fla.) at 3 p.m. All other games — consolation bracket — have been cancelled since Monday.
No official reason was given by tournament officials for West Linn’s decision.
This means the end of Jackson Shelstad‘s amazing performance. He scored 29 points on 11 field goals (one 3-pointer) and 4-for-5 shooting at the free-throw line against Damien. On Monday, Shelstad poured in 33 points, including four treys and 3-for-4 at the line, against Baldwin.
The count of cancelled games at this year’s ‘Iolani Classic is now four due to health and safety protocols. Pre-game testing provided on the ‘Iolani campus led to the detection of the COVID-19 virus on Monday after a flawless first day on Saturday. All local teams with the exception of host ‘Iolani and Baldwin, both testing negative, were then removed from the remaining schedule. Other local teams that tested negative were also removed as a safety precaution for mainland teams.
No mainland teams have tested positive.
Smart move by West Linn. All the local Hawaii teams got booted out of this tournament for positive cases, but somehow Iolani and the other mainland teams are supposed to be all good to stay and finish the tournament? That makes no sense.
If I was West Linn I would get the heck outta there as well. Who cares about a trophy when it’s pretty obvious that the cases are spreading in and around that campus.
Tournament should have never started to begin with.
The new school name should be (The Iolani Ige’s)

Players and coaches are tested at ‘Iolani’s infirmary as they arrive for the tournament. Positive result, no entry. No vaccination, no entry. There’s no “spreading” going on at the tournament. It’s safer there than the rest of the country, imho.
West Linn pulled out because Shelstad was diagnosed with covid today.
Yes players & coaches might be tested & feel safe but what about the the 1K students & fans at the football game who are not tested who might be positive & go right back to mingling with the basketball team on & off campus?
That’s Just like IGE shutting local businesses but letting thousands of tourists to keep coming to the islands.

It’s a complete joke to think no mainland players tested positive LOL. Pictures all over the internet of mainland players in Waikiki with no masks on. Stop it. The key is testing at Iolanis infirmary. Which means they control the results. And yes, we all know Iolani players was at the Aiea football game as well as family and friends. Look on instagram right now and you’ll see mainland players all over the island not wearing masks. But it’s the local teams testing positive? Haha. And these local teams was on the same court, no masks, close proximity with mainland players who are still playing? And now we all know why West Linn dropped out. Why didn’t the classic make a statement like they did with the local teams?
Hold on now, brother. You really believe 1,000 people somehow mingle with the basketball team, which did not play today and is not playing on Wednesday at the Classic? (UPDATE: ‘Iolani is now scheduled to play Central Catholic on Wednesday.)
How does this work? Do they knock on the door of each player’s home and barge in? All 1,000, parading right through the front door? Please show me some evidence.
You do know that all ‘Iolani students are vaccinated, don’t you? Nothing is perfect, but as far as precautions, they are there. Same with attendance at football games. Vaccination required. When’s the last time you went to a game?
I don’t know what your agenda is, but in this tournament, things are safe. As I wrote yesterday, a production manager at the tournament has been to nearly 10 other tournaments and this is the only one that has on-site testing.
Paul I’m sure you are on Iolani’s payroll to spin the truth. Classic Iolani to blame everyone except the big players. I heard many of the mainland teams are not vaccinated. Ridiculous! They are the ones who infected our vaccinated boys. Yet we pay the price. Iolani is so afraid of getting a bad name. Call this what it is, a superspreader event. But Iolani was able to bury that truth in the media as well. Nothing in the news. The whole tournament should have been canceled. I’m sure the big mainland teams didn’t even test, they probably threatened not to come back so Iolani allowed them. Iolani should have released a statement but the cower behind their ivory tower once again.

Paul, I’ve been to many football games this year and yes I seen first hand Iolani & other students without masks on.
What I mean by mingling is all students (Basketball too) are within a few feet apart in school last week & before, did you see basketball players @ Iolani football game?.
You do know that VACCINATED people can get & spread the virus RIGHT?

If the Iolani Classic is SO safe as you say, how are these teams & kids pulling out & testing positive?

Why can vaccinated people go to football but not basketball?

All the volleyball teams had to wear masks while playing but now that Covid is worse with the Delta & Omicron variant student athletes DON’T have to wear it? SMH!!
By the way, there were “fans” at Iolani Classic and I’m not talking about just family of the teams. If you follow social media you know already that lots of local people with no relations to the teams were allowed in to watch Bronny and Sierra Canyon. I don’t know the politics behind who got in, so jus sayin.

I love watching the Iolani classic every year, but I’ve lost a lot of respect for the people in charge of the decision making. Every local team kicked out of the tournament, yet Iolani still gets to participate the whole 4 days. I guarantee you Sierra Canyon had positive covid test results. They just wanted the Iolani vs Sierra Canyon match up. Especially since SC wasn’t even close to full strength. Supposedly this event was “closed to the public” but you see everyone with Iolani connections in attendance and they are allowed to stay and watch every game while parents of other teams can only watch their games then get forced to exit the gym right after. I give Iolani credit though, they wanted their team to receive all the shine and hype and that they did. Now everyone believes they’re head and shoulders above every team in the state just because they hung close to a Sierra Canyon team that didn’t have multiple key players. Well done Iolani, maybe next time you guys should find a way to level the playing field for the other local teams.

Your conspiracy theory is what it is. Do you really believe that I or anyone else is on someone’s “payroll” to hide anything? You are bonkers, dude. Can you explain how a team that didn’t step on the court had a positive case (at least one) and pulled out before even playing in the Classic?
Let’s use our time and energy for solutions. What you “heard” versus what the tournament really did to get to a championship game safely are two different things. Every player and coach was tested daily at the infirmary. I suggest you visit there one day. Those folks did tremendous work. The only HS tournament that I know of that has an on-site testing facility. Stay safe, get tested.
