Kamehameha hosts Maryknoll in ILH boys volleyball opener

Kamehameha outside hitter Cruse Aea sends his kill over Punahou's block during this ILH match in the 2019 season. Daryl Oumi/Special to Star-Advertiser (Mar. 14, 2019).

Through the decades, Randy Nako has seen just about every combination of skill sets and talent on a volleyball court.

The Kamehameha boys volleyball coach never saw anything like the spring of 2020, though. When the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season begins on Saturday, the Warriors will host Maryknoll in an 11:30 a.m., best-of-three matchup.

“It feels great to be able to have a full ILH season. Both the coaching staff and players are excited and working hard to prepare for our upcoming matches,” Nako said.

Kamehameha has an intriguing core of outside hitters Cruse Aea and Laiakea Hirahara with senior Cade Trujillo, a 6-foot-3 setter. Aea and Trujillo are seniors; Hirahara is a junior.

Getting used to protocols, particularly playing with masks on, is the same for every team this spring.

“We do have protocols in place and every gym that we go to will have their own protocols that we have to adhere to. We have been practicing with masks on, so the guys are used to it,” Nako noted.

No spectators will be allowed, but the matches of all ILH volleyball will be streamed live.

“We’re just excited to get to it,” Nako added.
