ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Kahuku finally overcomes Saint Louis for title

On this date in 2000, Kahuku finally struck a blow for the OIA against the ILH.

Kahuku stunned nationally-ranked Saint Louis 26-0 in front of 14,267 at Aloha Stadium to win the second state championship. The Red Raiders lost to the Crusaders in the final the previous year and five previous Prep Bowl contests. it was the first time the public school league won a Prep Bowl or state championship since Leilehua beat Saint Louis in 1984.

The leagues split state championships for the next decade after Kahuku’s breakthrough.


“This is for the OIA,” Kahuku coach Siuaki Livai said. “All the OIA teams out there, thank you for helping us get this far. Waianae, Kaimuki, everybody. This is for you.”

Kahuku snapped an 18-game winning streak for Saint Louis and snapped a run of 14 straight state titles. Running backs Marcus Salanoa and Mulivai Pula scored two touchdowns each in the upset. Free safety Aaron Francisco led Kahuku’s defense with nine tackles and linebacker Douglas Hiu had three stops for losses.
